Former first round draft choice Ryan Wagner has retired from baseball, according to MASN.com.
Wagner had two saves and a 6.11 ERA in 13 games with Triple-A Syracuse this year. The relief pitcher had season-ending shoulder surgery in 2007, but he returned to Class-A ball last year before being recalled to Triple-A Columbus to finish the season. Wagner hasn't offered an explanation for his retirement, but Washington manager Manny Acta was shocked at the news of the youngster's retirement.

Nationals recalled RHP Ryan Wagner from Triple-A Columbus.
Wagner, the one-time Reds' closer of the future, had a 5.68 ERA in 19 innings for Columbus after making his return from shoulder surgery. He'll be pitching for his spot on the 40-man roster.
Tue, Sep 2, 2008 03:52:00 PM
Nationals activated RHP Ryan Wagner from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Columbus.
Wagner has allowed seven earned runs and walked 12 in 14 1/3 innings in the minors since returning from shoulder surgery. He'll probably join the Nationals in September.
Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:54:00 AM
Ryan Wagner (shoulder surgery) threw a pain-free bullpen session Saturday.
Wagner is scheduled to pitch a simulated game Monday. There's no timetable yet on his return.

Nationals placed C Wilson Ramos on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.
Ramos missed a couple weeks last month with the same injury. He doesn't think the strain is too bad, but it's possible the Nats will play it safe and hold him out longer this time around.

Danny Espinosa has been playing with a small fracture in his right wrist for the past month.
It's actually a loose bone chip in his hand. The injury stems from when he was hit by a pitch from Paul Maholm on April 14 and certainly explains his struggles. Espinosa hopes to avoid a trip to the disabled list and possible surgery, but the Nationals plan to rest him for a few days. Steve Lombardozzi will fill in at second base for the time being.

Jayson Werth (hamstring) will not be ready for activation from the disabled list on Friday and could be sidelined for as much as two more weeks.
Nationals manager Davey Johnson said he received an "alarming" report on Werth Monday, which obviously doesn't sound good. The outfielder experienced a setback with his hamstring during a rehab game last week and has yet to return to game action. He was slated to see a specialist over the weekend and evidently didn't receive good news. Roger Bernadina and Tyler Moore will continue to be the primary fill-ins for Werth.

Ross Detwiler (back) played catch Thursday and will throw a bullpen session Saturday.
Detwiler left his start on May 15 with lower back spasms, but managed to avoid a stint on the disabled list. If all goes well Saturday, he will return to the rotation Tuesday against the Orioles.

Ryan Mattheus is expected to be sidelined 4-6 weeks with a fractured right hand.
Mattheus won't require surgery, but since the injury is to his pitching hand he can't do a whole lot while out. He'll have to build his arm strength back up once out of his cast.

Christian Garcia (forearm) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend with Double-A Harrisburg.
Garcia has been shut down since the early part of spring training with a partial tendon tear in his right forearm, but he's ready to return to game action. The Nationals were planning to stretch him out as a starter prior to the injury, but he'll pitch in relief for the time being.
