Braves acquired OF Matt Diaz and cash considerations from the Pirates for a player to be named later.
Of course, Diaz previously played with the Braves from 2006-2010. The 33-year-old outfielder has a .330/.369/.512 batting line and an .881 OPS against left-handed pitching during his career and should be a useful righty bat off the bench for Fredi Gonzalez. Diaz signed a two-year, $4.25 million contract over the winter, so he is still owed $2 million in 2012.

Matt Diaz picked up two of the Pirates' four hits in their shutout loss to the Brewers on Wednesday.
The Pirates could get nothing going against Shaun Marcum in their worst offensive effort of the young 2011 season. The two-hit night was Diaz's second in three games, but platooning with Garrett Jones in right field, he has no mixed-league value.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Matt Diaz and Garrett Jones won't be in a strict platoon in right field.
"Diaz is not going to just play against left-handed pitching," Hurdle said. "We have six right-handers right out of the chute [in the first six games]. He will play a game here [in Chicago] and will probably play a game in St. Louis." We wouldn't expect Hurdle to sit Diaz for a week straight to start off the season, but the fact remains that he will get most of his at-bats against southpaws, and that's the way it should be given his .334 career average against them (as compared to a .269 mark against right-handers).

Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com hears that Matt Diaz will make "approximately" $4.25 million in his new two-year contract with the Pirates.
Diaz, who made $2.55 million this past season, was non-tendered by the Braves last week. He has a reputation as a lefty-killer, but it's not clear if the Pirates intend to use him as a regular or as part of a platoon.

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes that Chipper Jones (calf) is "worse today than before."
Jones hasn't started since suffering a left calf contusion when he was smacked in the leg by a line drive off the bat of Rays' outfielder B.J. Upton last Friday. According to O'Brien, the stiffness moved up in his calf after they "milked" the contusion on Wednesday. We're not sure what that means exactly, but it certainly sounds gross. He remains sidelined indefinitely.

Braves placed RHP Arodys Vizcaino on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26, with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
It's a procedural move, as Vizcaino underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this month. The hard-throwing right-hander will hope to make it back for the start of 2013.

Braves placed LHP Robert Fish on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26, with left elbow tendinitis.
Fish made three appearances this spring before being shut down due to soreness. The 24-year-old left-hander was selected from the Angels in December's Rule 5 Draft, but the Braves get to keep him around as long as he's on the disabled list.
