Free agent Akinori Otsuka, who missed last season following elbow surgery, plans to throw for teams next month.
Otsuka's former teams, the Padres and Rangers, both figure to be interested, and they won't be the only ones if Otsuka comes out throwing close to 100 percent. The soon-to-be 37-year-old right-hander has a 2.44 ERA in 236 appearances as a major leaguer.

Free agent Akinori Otsuka will undergo elbow surgery Wednesday, he reported on his blog.
Otsuka didn't say whether it'd be Tommy John surgery or something less severe. We're guessing he'll need to have the ligament replaced. If it was a lesser problem, he should have had it taken care of months ago.

The Phillies may be interested in Akinori Otsuka, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.
Non-tendered by the Rangers earlier this week, Otsuka figures to be a popular target if teams are confident that he's healthy after missing the second half with arm problems.

Rangers non-tendered RHP Akinori Otsuka and outfielder Nick Gorneault.
The Rangers are setting Otsuka free even though the reports back from his rehabilitation have been positive. With the way the relief market has blown up, it would have been worth the risk to pay Otsuka $4 million, especially since they still would have had him under control for 2009. This makes C.J. Wilson the current favorite to close for the Rangers, though the team figures to consider Octavio Dotel and maybe a couple of other options.

Matt Harrison recently had a setback with his back that required an additional surgery on Wednesday.
Harrison underwent an operation on April 23 to repair a herniated disk in his lower back but began feeling additional discomfort this week, necessitating another procedure. According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers are "operating under the assumption that Harrison will pitch again this season, but he will be out for at least three months." In other words, we won't see him again until August at the earliest, and it seems like there's a good chance it will be longer than that.

Alexi Ogando (biceps) underwent an MRI which revealed no structural damage.
Ogando was placed on the disabled list on Thursday with biceps tendinitis after he felt some pain during Wednesday's start against the Athletics. It's an encouraging sign that no more serious damage was found, and his stay on the DL should be a short one. Josh Lindblom is expected to hold his place in the rotation while he's sidelined.

Colby Lewis (elbow) is expected to rejoin the Rangers' rotation in the first week of June.
After dealing with a minor bout of triceps tendinitis, Lewis will resume his rehab assignment at Double-A Frisco on Monday. He'll need two additional outings after that before being activated. The right-hander is a nice roster stash in fantasy leagues if you have room.

Joakim Soria (elbow) will be shut down for 2-3 weeks with a strained pectoral muscle and is now not expected to return until around July 1.
A tough break for the Rangers, as Soria had been slated to join the Rangers' bullpen as soon as late next month. The good news is that his surgically-repaired elbow is fine. The Rangers will continue to use a host of players to set up for Joe Nathan.
