Frank Francisco notched his first save in six days in Sunday's win over the Blue Jays, allowing a walk and a hit while fanning three in an inning of work.
Francisco appeared on the verge of another meltdown after issuing a leadoff walk to Yunel Escobar and allowing a single to Jose Bautista, but he settled down to fan Edwin Encarnacion, J.P. Arencibia and Eric Thames in order to end the game. All three punchouts were of the swinging variety. It's rarely been pretty, but Francisco has now allowed "only" one run in three innings of work after failing to record an out against the Marlins last Sunday. He remains the Amazins stopper until further notice.
May 20 - 4:51 PM
It didn't come easy, but Frank Francisco notched his ninth save of the season in Monday's win over the Brewers.
Francisco blew back-to-back saves over the weekend, but Mets manager Terry Collins went right back to the well Monday. It nearly backfired. Francisco allowed one run on two hits and a walk before getting Brooks Conrad to strike out looking and George Kottaras to fly out to center field for the final out of the ballgame. We fully expect Francisco to get the next save opportunity, but it's worth noting that Jon Rauch was getting loose in the bullpen when the tying run came up to the plate. He would be the most likely replacement if Francisco's struggles continue.
May 14 - 10:21 PM
Mets manager Terry Collins said Monday that Frank Francisco will continue being used in the closer role.
Francisco blew two saves over the weekend and has an ugly 8.56 ERA on the year, so many speculated that he could get a break from the role, but Collins believes the veteran right-hander is still the team's best option at closer. Francisco's two-year, $12 million contract probably buys him a little more rope here, but keeping Jon Rauch stashed in fantasy leagues isn't a bad idea.

Mets manager Terry Collins said he has "eight options" to close games.
Collins said he is concerned about veteran closer Frank Francisco. "We'll address it," Collins said. "I have eight options [to close]. But, I'm not going to address that right now, when emotions are running high." Collins will make an announcement on Monday about the back-end of his bullpen. We suspect Jon Rauch will replace Francisco, though Bobby Parnell could also be given a shot. Francisco has an 8.56 ERA and 1.98 WHIP after two ugly outings against Miami over the weekend.

D.L.
Josh Thole (concussion) has resumed baseball activities, including hitting, but has not gotten back behind the plate yet.
Thole landed on the 7-day disabled list earlier this month after suffering a concussion in a home plate collision with Phillies' infielder Ty Wigginton. Mets manager Terry Collins is hoping he'll be ready to catch an inning in extended spring training on Friday. We wouldn't count on his return next week.

Mets manager Terry Collins hopes Ruben Tejada (quad) will be ready to begin a minor league rehab assignment on Monday.
Tejada is currently rehabbing in extended spring training in Florida. It's not clear which minor league affiliate he'll be joining, but he'll likely only need a handful of games before he's ready to return. The 22-year-old shortstop was batting .305/.362/.400 over his first 117 plate appearances this season prior to suffering a right quad strain on May 6.

Mets manager Terry Collins hopes that Jason Bay (rib) will be ready to DH in rehab games next week.
Bay is currently working his way back from a non-displaced rib fracture. He was recently cleared to increase baseball activities and was slated to take batting practice Wednesday in Florida. He's likely around 10 days to two weeks away from rejoin the Mets.

Mets transferred RHP Mike Pelfrey from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
It's a procedural move in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Vinny Rottino. Pelfrey, of course, is done for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery Tuesday.

Mets placed RHP Miguel Batista on the 15-day disabled list with lower back stiffness.
Batista left Saturday's start with the ailment. Though the Mets have yet to reveal a timetable for him, he doesn't seem likely to miss much more than the minimum time. Jeremy Hefner is expected to replace him in the rotation.

Pedro Beato (shoulder) allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless inning for High-A St. Lucie on Monday in his second minor league rehab appearance.
Beato, who began the year on the DL with rotator cuff inflammation, tossed two hitless innings in his first appearance on Saturday. The Mets may option him to Triple-A Buffalo once he has built up enough arm strength, but he figures to find his way back to the big leagues before long.
