Tigers designated RHP Collin Balester for assignment.
He was cleared to make room for outfielder Quintin Berry on the active roster. Balester, who was acquired from the Nationals during the offseason, has a 6.50 ERA and 12/11 K/BB ratio over 18 innings of work this season. He could draw interest on waivers.

The Tigers are expected to designate Collin Balester for assignment prior to Wednesday's game.
They'll purchase the contract of speedy outfielder Quintin Berry from Triple-A Toledo to take his spot on the roster. Balester holds a 6.50 ERA and 12/11 K/BB ratio over 18 innings this season.

Collin Balester walked his first batter of the spring Monday, but he pitched another scoreless inning against the Phillies.
Balester has allowed just one run in eight innings. He was expected to have a bullpen spot regardless, since he's out of options, but it doesn't seem like it's made him complacent.

Tigers acquired RHP Collin Balester from the Nationals in exchange for RHP Ryan Perry.
Balester, 25, posted a 4.54 ERA over 23 relief appearances with the Nationals this past season, despite a very solid 34/14 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings. He has pitched much better since being converted from a starter to a reliever and should be a nice addition to the middle innings for Detroit.

Austin Jackson will be placed on the disabled list Friday with an abdominal strain.
We figured it was just a matter of time. Jackson hasn't played since last Wednesday, so the Tigers couldn't afford to go shorthanded on their bench any longer. The 25-year-old center fielder is scheduled to return to Detroit on Friday to undergo additional testing, including an MRI. His stint on the disabled list will be backdated to May 17, so he'll be eligible to return on June 1. Quintin Berry and Don Kelly should share playing time in center field for now. Ryan Raburn will be activated from the bereavement list Friday in a corresponding roster move.

Victor Martinez (knee surgery) has been off crutches for 10 days.
Martinez had microfracture surgery on his left knee in late January and underwent a procedure in early March to help the healing of his ACL. V-Mart can't afford any setbacks, but he's encouraged about the possibility of returning in September. We should know more about his status when he undergoes an MRI during a check-up in July.

Valverde hasn't pitched since last Tuesday because of lower back tightness. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 5.51 ERA and is just 7-for-9 in save opportunities this season but remains a strong fantasy option at closer and should be made active in all leagues immediately.

Marte is over the hamstring strain that cost him all of April and should be ready to assume a middle relief role in Detroit. He made his major league debut last year.

Good news. Schlereth is already performing range of motion exercises and should soon be cleared to resume throwing. He's been on the disabled list since late April.

Al Alburquerque (elbow) has begun long-tossing at the Tigers' spring training facility in Florida.
Alburquerque is throwing from 150 feet, and if he continues to be progress should be cleared to throw off a mound before long. The Tigers are hoping to get the hard-throwing reliever back around the All-Star break.
