Cubs optioned RHP Chris Volstad to Triple-A Iowa.
It's no surprise after Volstad's latest blowup Thursday against the Phillies pushed his ERA up to 7.46 and record to 0-6. The former top prospect has simply failed to have any sort of long-term consistency over his career and will now try to work on things in the minors. Travis Wood will take his spot in the rotation next week.

Chris Volstad was removed after allowing four runs in two innings against the Phillies on Thursday.
Volstad is now 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA and is in jeopardy of losing his spot in the starting rotation, with Travis Wood the most likely candidate to replace him. Wood is 2-3 with a 4.98 ERA in six starts at Triple-A Iowa and recorded a no-decision in his only start with the Cubs this season.

Chris Volstad surrendered six runs in six innings Saturday in a loss to the Brewers.
Volstad gave up six hits and two walks while striking out just one. He allowed five runs in his final inning of work, the big blow of which was a grand slam by Edwin Maysonet. Volstad has allowed four runs or more in each of his last five starts and owns an ugly 6.92 ERA on the year. He can be avoided in most fantasy formats.

Chris Volstad was knocked around again Saturday, yielding five runs on four hits and three walks over just five frames in a loss to the Dodgers.
Volstad moved up a day to start in place of the ill Matt Garza, and he struggled once again. The tall right-hander's ERA now sits at 6.55, and he's yet to register a quality start in six tries. The Cubs have to be thinking about booting him from the rotation in favor of Travis Wood at this point. If he's still in the starting five, Volstad will get the Brewers next week.

Cubs placed C Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a slight tear in his left meniscus.
He'll need arthroscopic surgery, which will sideline him for around three weeks. The Cubs acquired Koyie Hill from the Reds earlier in the day for depth and officially purchased his contract from the minors. With Steve Clevenger (oblique) still out and Welington Castillo out for a week with a mild MCL sprain in his right knee, Hill and Blake Lalli will share catching duties for now.

Steve Clevenger (oblique) went 0-for-2 on Wednesday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Iowa.
He also played four innings behind the plate. Clevenger should be ready rejoin the Cubs within the next few days and figures to get a good amount of playing time with Geovany Soto and Welington Castillo both sidelined.

Carlos Marmol (hamstring) threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.
If he wakes up feeling no abnormal discomfort on Thursday morning, Marmol should be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday night with Triple-A Iowa. The 28-year-old right-hander is aiming to return to the Cubs' bullpen by next weekend. He is sure to be eased back into high-leverage relief appearances.

Cubs placed RHP Marcos Mateo on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Mateo came down with a bit of soreness in his forearm near the end of spring training. He missed a majority of 2011 with forearm troubles, so the Cubs are going to play it as safe as possible with the righty reliever.

The strain is being referred to as "moderate," so it could be more than a minimum stay on the DL for the Rule 5 pick. Scott Maine takes his spot on the roster.
