Padres activated RHP Dale Thayer from the paternity leave list.
Thayer was away from the Padres over the weekend in order to be present for the birth of his child. He should resume getting save chances for the Padres with Huston Street (calf) still on the disabled list.

Dale Thayer will rejoin the Padres' bullpen Monday.
Thayer was excused from the club on Friday for the birth of his third child and spent the entire weekend away. Luke Gregerson nailed down a save in his absence on Sunday. Huston Street (calf) is still on the disabled list.

Padres placed RHP Dale Thayer on the paternity leave list.
Thayer can remain on paternity leave for 24 to 72 hours. Luke Gregerson could be an option to fill in if there's a save chance while he's away. The Padres called up Josh Spence to replace him on the active roster.

Called upon to protect a 5-3 ninth-inning lead, Dale Thayer blew his third save Tuesday against the Padres.
Tonight's outing isn't Thayer's fault; if Bud Black's desire is to continue to play with fire, he's going to get scorched. Rotoworld wouldn't dare stretch that cliché to include general manager Josh Byrnes, who would probably prefer, at this point, that his skipper juggles flames with late leads. After all, the Padres, 16 games below .500 entering the day, stand to acquire no worse than the third pick in next year's draft. Conspiracy theories aren't our thing. Pointing out that a 31-year-old journeyman reliever with a 4.43 career ERA shouldn't be protecting leads is. Regardless, until Huston Street returns, Thayer is roughly the 32nd-most valuable reliever in fantasy baseball.

Suspended
Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson.
Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.

Logan Forsythe (foot) took batting practice on the field Thursday.
It's the first time he's done so since plantar fasciitis in his right foot sent him to the DL prior to the season. Forsythe also took ground balls before Thursday's game. "He's on the field doing baseball activities stuff, so he's on the way back," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He's on the mend." The team hasn't revealed a timetable for Forsythe, but he should be ready sometime next month if all goes well.

Cameron Maybin (wrist) could begin a rehab assignment Friday.
Maybin was recently cleared to resume hitting activities and hasn't had any setbacks. On the disabled list since April 17, he could rejoin the Padres soon. Maybin was hitting just .091/.167/.121 with no home runs prior to the injury but offers plenty of fantasy potential when he's healthy.

Clayton Richard (illness) will make a second rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Richard struck out eight over six innings of one-run ball Thursday for Tucson, but the Padres want him to have another tune-up. "He feels good about where he is right now, how his arm feels and how he feels physically in general, from the whole bad virus he contracted," manager Bud Black said. Assuming Richard feels fine in his next outing, he could rejoin the rotation as soon as next weekend.

Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery.
Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break.

Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break.
