Dodgers signed LHP Jonathan Sanchez to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Sanchez can opt out of the deal on July 1 if he is not on Los Angeles' major league roster. The 30-year-old left-hander posted an 11.85 ERA and 2.42 WHIP in 13 2/3 innings earlier this season with the Pirates. He is doubtful to pull off a sudden turnaround.

ESPN's Pedro Gomez reports that the Dodgers are set to sign left-hander Jonathan Sanchez, pending a physical.
The deal is expected to be made official by Wednesday night. Sanchez was released by the Pirates earlier this month after he posted an ugly 11.85 ERA and 15/8 K/BB ratio in 13 2/3 innings. He will function as rotation depth for the Dodgers at Triple-A Albuquerque.

ESPN's Pedro Gomez reports that Jonathan Sanchez is "zeroing in" on a deal with the Dodgers.
Gomez says Sanchez "may need a few starts in the minors" before he's called up. With Zack Greinke returning Wednesday and Ted Lilly not far behind, there wouldn't appear to be a spot available in the Dodgers' rotation. He might just be stashed at Triple-A as insurance. The southpaw still needs to serve a six-game suspension for throwing at Cardinals' first baseman Allen Craig last month.

Pirates released LHP Jonathan Sanchez.
Not surprisingly, Sanchez failed to draw any interest after he was designated for assignment early last week. The 30-year-old southpaw has an obscene 8.73 ERA and 60/61 K/BB ratio over 78 1/3 innings at the major league level dating back to the start of 2012.

Ellis was supposed to play four innings and receive two at bats, but a rainy night at Double-A Chattanooga forced him out after only three innings and one at-bat. It's certainly encouraging news to hear that it wasn't an injury related setback that caused the early exit.

Hanley Ramirez is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after an MRI confirmed the diagnosis of a left hamstring strain.
Ramirez was placed on the disabled list over the weekend after he injured his hamstring during Friday's game. While there was initially some hope that he would be able to return at the minimum, he'll now likely be sidelined until the early part of June. Dee Gordon should get most of the playing time at shortstop for now.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Friday that Jerry Hairston Jr. (knee, groin) had "a little bit of a setback."
Hairston was placed on the disabled list earlier this month with a left groin strain, but he's now dealing with a knee issue. The setback means that he won't be activated from the DL next week when first eligible. The Dodgers are expected to send Hairston on a rehab assignment before he's cleared to return.

Manager Don Mattingly said after Beckett's start Monday that the groin ailment was minor, but the Dodgers will play it safe. He seems likely to be activated when eligible or shortly after. Matthew Magill seems likely to get a start in Beckett's place, and Ted Lilly (rib cage) could be ready next week.

The move clears a spot for Scott Van Slyke on the 40-man roster. Billingsley had season-ending Tommy John surgery last month and will likely miss the early part of 2014.

Lilly wasn't exactly sharp, yielding five hits and three walks, but he felt no discomfort in his rib cage and is hoping to return to the Dodgers' rotation next week. The Dodgers were aggressive with Zack Greinke (clavicle) and might as well be aggressive with Lilly.

Elbert retired all three batters he faced, fanning two, Friday in his rehab debut. The left-handed reliever is on his way back from dual elbow surgeries and is expected to spend several weeks on the farm. He should be ready to join the Dodgers' bullpen around early June.

Tolleson was placed on the disabled list April 15 with a lower back strain and now needs surgery to repair the injury. He is expected to be sidelined for 3-5 months and could feasibly miss the rest of the season.
