Cubs sent RHP Frankie De La Cruz outright to Triple-A Iowa.
De La Cruz was out of minor league options, but he decided to accept the assignment to Triple-A. The 28-year-old right-hander was claimed off waivers from the Brewers earlier this spring and will function as organizational relief depth this season for the Cubs.

Cubs claimed RHP Frankie De La Cruz off waivers from the Brewers.
De La Cruz was cut by the Brewers after allowing right runs -- seven earned -- over his first 3 1/3 spring innings. The right-hander has a pretty decent arm, though, and has experiences as both a starter and reliever. He's out of options and seems likely to crack the Cubs' Opening Day roster as a long man.

If Chris Narveson (thumb) is unable to start Monday during the doubleheader with the Pirates, Frankie De La Cruz could get the ball in his place.
The options are to either go with De La Cruz in what would likely be an abbreviated start since he threw an inning out of the bullpen Thursday and Friday, or call up someone, likely Michael Fiers, for the outing. Wily Peralta is not being considered for the start. Narveson will test out the thumb Saturday before a decision is made. The way the Brewers are going, they could probably let Ron Roenicke make the start and still come away victorious.

Brewers purchased the contract of RHP Eulogio De La Cruz from Triple-A Nashville.
De La Cruz is 7-6 with a 3.88 ERA in 25 games -- 23 starts -- with Nashville this season, striking out 126 over 137 innings. He could start for the Brewers over the weekend in place of the injured Chris Narveson, though Marco Estrada is also being considered. Zack Greinke is expected to be pushed up a day to start Friday.

Cubs placed C Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a slight tear in his left meniscus.
He'll need arthroscopic surgery, which will sideline him for around three weeks. The Cubs acquired Koyie Hill from the Reds earlier in the day for depth and officially purchased his contract from the minors. With Steve Clevenger (oblique) still out and Welington Castillo out for a week with a mild MCL sprain in his right knee, Hill and Blake Lalli will share catching duties for now.

Steve Clevenger (oblique) went 0-for-2 on Wednesday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Iowa.
He also played four innings behind the plate. Clevenger should be ready rejoin the Cubs within the next few days and figures to get a good amount of playing time with Geovany Soto and Welington Castillo both sidelined.

Carlos Marmol (hamstring) threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.
If he wakes up feeling no abnormal discomfort on Thursday morning, Marmol should be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday night with Triple-A Iowa. The 28-year-old right-hander is aiming to return to the Cubs' bullpen by next weekend. He is sure to be eased back into high-leverage relief appearances.

Cubs placed RHP Marcos Mateo on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Mateo came down with a bit of soreness in his forearm near the end of spring training. He missed a majority of 2011 with forearm troubles, so the Cubs are going to play it as safe as possible with the righty reliever.

The strain is being referred to as "moderate," so it could be more than a minimum stay on the DL for the Rule 5 pick. Scott Maine takes his spot on the roster.
