Reds signed OF Brian Barton to a minor league contract.
Barton batted .254/.344/.370 with seven homers and 20 steals at the Triple-A level in 2009 but was released by the Dodgers just before the season last year. He ended up playing for Newark and Bridgeport in the Independent Leagues, winning the Atlantic League batting title with a .375 mark. Now 28, the Aerospace Engineering major from Miami should be able to make something of himself in the "real world" if his baseball career doesn't pan out.

Dodgers signed OF Brian Barton to a minor league contract.
The deal includes an invitation to spring training. Barton, 27, was released by the Braves last month after spending nearly the entire 2009 season with Triple-A Gwinnett. He batted .268/.354/.392 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 153 at-bats with the Cardinals in 2008, so he could prove useful as a righty bat and potential speedster off Joe Torre's bench.

Braves sent outfielder Brian Barton outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Barton does not factor into Atlanta's September plans and won't be around if the club makes it to October. He's batting .251/.352/.387 with seven home runs, 43 RBI and 12 stolen bases this season for Triple-A Gwinnett. With a strong offseason, he could crack the roster in 2010 as a utility outfielder.

He was recalled for a cup of coffee Wednesday in order to keep a roster spot warm until newly acquired Nate McLouth arrived.

It's merely a procedural move. Ludwick has been ruled out until early July with a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

The Reds have determined that Chris Heisey's hamstring aggravation was not severe.
"It wasn’t horrendous," assistant general manager Bob Miller said. "He tweaked it." Heisey won't return until the next homestand, which runs from May 24-28, at the earliest. It's certainly possible his absence could stretch into June.

Manny Parra (pectoral) struck out two in a scoreless inning Monday in his first rehab appearance with Double-A Pensacola.
No word on the timeline for his return, but he'll likely make at least one more appearance before being activated. Parra has an 8.10 ERA and 7/3 K/BB ratio over 6 2/3 innings prior to going down with a strained left pectoral muscle at the end of April.

Reds transferred RHP Nick Masset from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
Masset is still recovering from right shoulder surgery, and he was recently shut down after suffering a setback. The right-hander hasn't pitched since 2011.
