The move clears him from the 40-man roster. Cardenas, 25, made his major league debut this year and batted just .183 (11-for-60) with six doubles and two RBI in 45 games.

The Cubs have added at least three players to their September roster. Miguel Socolovich will be recalled Sunday while Rafael Dolis could rejoin the bullpen early next week. Chris Rusin and Anthony Recker will be promoted Tuesday.

Cardenas has batted .234/.265/.362 with zero homers and two RBI in 32 games this season with the Cubs. He could be brought back up when rosters expand in September.

Adrian Cardenas hit a pinch-hit RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning on Tuesday, breaking up A.J. Burnett’s no-hitter.
Cardenas hit for Jeff Beliveau and promptly lined a single into right field, spoiling what would have been a memorable night for Burnett and the Pirates. The 24-year-old Cardenas has struggled in limited at-bats this season, hitting just .211 with one RBI in 38 at-bats on the year. He remains irrelevant in fantasy circles.

Kyuji Fujikawa underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.
The reconstructive elbow procedure was performed by Dr. James Andrews and deemed a success. Fujikawa has already been placed on the 60-day disabled list and is unlikely to be ready to pitch for the Cubs again until June of next season. He signed a two-year, $9.5 million free agent contract with Chicago this past winter.

No word on the severity of the injury. Dolis has yet to allow a run in five appearances with the Cubs this season. Blake Parker has been called up from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.

Putnam left Tuesday's game with elbow soreness and is scheduled to undergo an MRI. The Cubs have called up Brooks Raley to replace him on the active roster.

Arodys Vizcaino has been ruled out for the season after recently undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to address a calcium buildup.
Vizcaino wasn't progressed as hoped in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and now we know why. It's a shame that he won't appear for the Cubs in 2013, but the good news is that his ligaments are fine and he should be ready to go for spring training. Vizcaino will be shut down for six weeks before beginning his rehab.
