Pirates signed OF Darren Ford to a minor league contract.
The 27-year-old outfielder hit .273/.326/.385 with four homers, 33 RBI and 26 stolen bases in 70 games at Triple-A Tacoma during the 2012 season. One of the fastest players in all of baseball, Ford will compete for a reserve outfielder role with the Pirates.

Mariners signed OF Darren Ford to a minor league contract.
Ford became a free agent after being designated for assignment by the Giants last month. The 26-year-old speedster batted .286 (4-for-14) and went 7-for-12 in stolen base attempts over 26 games at the major league level this season. He could stick as an extra outfielder.

Giants recalled OF Darren Ford from Double-A Richmond.
Ford is the owner of just 10 career MLB at-bats. He's had an uninspiring year in the minors, hitting .265/.340/.370 in 205 plate appearances between three levels of play. He figures to be used mostly as a pinch runner.

Starling Marte (rib cage) entered Sunday's game as a defensive replacement and wound up 0-for-2.
Marte was held out of the starting lineup (and has not started a game since last Wednesday) due to soreness in his left rib cage, but the issue is obviously improving. Marte, 24, is batting .287/.355/.422 with six home runs and 20 stolen bases in 64 games this year.

A.J. Burnett said Friday that he has a Grade 1 tear in his right calf.
Burnett, who was placed on the disabled list Thursday, said he currently can't put any weight on his leg. There's no clear timetable for his return, but the veteran right-hander said that he hopes it's "not a six-week thing." The Pirates and fantasy owners are hoping the game, but it doesn't sound like he'll be back when he's first eligible.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Monday that Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) "felt good" while throwing off the mound Monday.
It's not clear what the next step will be, but it could be enough for the Pirates to send him out on a rehab start. Rodriguez has been sidelined since June 5 with left forearm tightness.

James McDonald (shoulder) might be moved to the bullpen when he is activated from the disabled list.
Gerrit Cole's promotion and Charlie Morton's return created a potential logjam in the Pittsburgh rotation and McDonald is probably going to have to be the odd man out. The 28-year-old righty owns a 5.76 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 29 2/3 innings this season. He is on the 15-day DL currently because of inflammation in his shoulder.

Jeff Karstens (shoulder) underwent rotator cuff and labrum surgery on Friday.
Karstens will be shut down for a minimum of 10-12 weeks as he recovers from the injury. He had been aiming to join the Pirates' starting rotation in early June, but is now unlikely to return this season.
