Pirates signed RHP Brooks Brown to a minor league contract.
The deal includes a spring training invite. Brown, 27, had a 4.90 ERA and 81/58 K/BB ratio in 112 innings over 19 relief appearances and 10 starts this year with the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate.

Tigers acquired RHP Brooks Brown from the Diamondbacks for catcher James Skelton.
Brown, a 2006 supplemental first-round pick, has yet to develop a consistent secondary pitch and doesn't get enough grounders with his 89-92 mph fastball. He finished 6-15 with a 4.18 ERA and a 112/67 K/BB ratio in 144 1/3 innings in Double-A last season. A move to the pen might give him some additional velocity and turn him back into prospect, but we're guessing the Diamondbacks won't regret parting with him.

Diamondbacks reassigned RHP Brooks Brown, RHP Hector Ambriz, RHP Barry Enright, RHP Matt Green, RHP Wes Roemer, LHP Mark Rosen, 1B-3B Jamie D'Antona, C Frank Curreri and OF Chris Rahl to minor league camp.
All easy cuts. Brown rates as one of the Diamondbacks' better prospects, but he's a long shot to see time in the majors this year. D'Antona could see time on the bench if injuries strike.

Brooks Brown allowed one run in five innings Saturday in his debut for Double-A Mobile.
Brown struck out five. The 2006 supplemental first-round pick was 6-3 with a 2.81 ERA, 66 H and 74/23 K/BB in 80 IP for Single-A Visalia. The Diamondbacks intend to keep using him as a starter, but he might fit in best as a long-term setup man for the club.

Starling Marte went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored as the Pirates beat the Reds 4-0 on Tuesday.
Marte was the catalyst of the Pirates offense on Tuesday. The triple led off the game and was the Pirates' only extra-base hit of the night. He later scored before singling in a run of his own in the seventh inning. Marte also stole a base in the game, his 21st of the season.

A.J. Burnett said Friday that he has a Grade 1 tear in his right calf.
Burnett, who was placed on the disabled list Thursday, said he currently can't put any weight on his leg. There's no clear timetable for his return, but the veteran right-hander said that he hopes it's "not a six-week thing." The Pirates and fantasy owners are hoping the game, but it doesn't sound like he'll be back when he's first eligible.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Monday that Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) "felt good" while throwing off the mound Monday.
It's not clear what the next step will be, but it could be enough for the Pirates to send him out on a rehab start. Rodriguez has been sidelined since June 5 with left forearm tightness.

James McDonald (shoulder) might be moved to the bullpen when he is activated from the disabled list.
Gerrit Cole's promotion and Charlie Morton's return created a potential logjam in the Pittsburgh rotation and McDonald is probably going to have to be the odd man out. The 28-year-old righty owns a 5.76 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 29 2/3 innings this season. He is on the 15-day DL currently because of inflammation in his shoulder.
