James Russell has yet to see a save opportunity since Carlos Marmol was removed from the closer role.
Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Russell and Rafael Dolis would share the role, but it's been Dolis used in both save chances even though he faced two left-handed batters while converting his first save and two lefties and a switch-hitter in his second chance. It appears that Russell, who holds a 0.73 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 13 appearances, might only be used in the ninth inning on days where Dolis is unavailable.

James Russell has been bumped from the starting rotation to the bullpen.
The Cubs don't need a No. 5 starter for another two weeks, so Russell will now be used in relief. Barring a disaster, he's unlikely to make another start, as at least one of Randy Wells (forearm), Andrew Cashner (shoulder) or Doug Davis should be ready at that point.

James Russell gave up five runs -- four earned -- in 4 2/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Dodgers.
Although Randy Wells is still probably three weeks away, this should bring an end to the experiment of using Russell as a starter. He lost all four of his starts and hasn't even lasted five innings in any of them.

The Cubs hope not using James Russell out of the bullpen in between starts will result in a better outing Tuesday.
Russell has been terrible in his two prior starts, but he hasn't been used like a typical starter, making two relief appearances between his outings. Perhaps regular side work instead of appearing in games will help him. We're not terribly optimistic that it will. The Cubs would love to replace Russell in the rotation, but they're simply lacking options.

Cubs placed C Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a slight tear in his left meniscus.
He'll need arthroscopic surgery, which will sideline him for around three weeks. The Cubs acquired Koyie Hill from the Reds earlier in the day for depth and officially purchased his contract from the minors. With Steve Clevenger (oblique) still out and Welington Castillo out for a week with a mild MCL sprain in his right knee, Hill and Blake Lalli will share catching duties for now.

Steve Clevenger (oblique) went 0-for-2 on Wednesday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Iowa.
He also played four innings behind the plate. Clevenger should be ready rejoin the Cubs within the next few days and figures to get a good amount of playing time with Geovany Soto and Welington Castillo both sidelined.

Carlos Marmol (hamstring) threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.
If he wakes up feeling no abnormal discomfort on Thursday morning, Marmol should be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday night with Triple-A Iowa. The 28-year-old right-hander is aiming to return to the Cubs' bullpen by next weekend. He is sure to be eased back into high-leverage relief appearances.

Cubs placed RHP Marcos Mateo on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Mateo came down with a bit of soreness in his forearm near the end of spring training. He missed a majority of 2011 with forearm troubles, so the Cubs are going to play it as safe as possible with the righty reliever.

The strain is being referred to as "moderate," so it could be more than a minimum stay on the DL for the Rule 5 pick. Scott Maine takes his spot on the roster.
