Signed as an international free agent in 2006, De La Cruz has a career 4.35 ERA over parts of six seasons in the minors. The 24-year-old should open 2013 at the Triple-A level with the Nationals.

De La Cruz has yet to reach Triple-A despite being in pro ball for seven years. He's merely organizational depth.

Tigers sent LHP Kelvin De La Cruz outright to Double-A Erie.
De La Cruz was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Monday and passed through waivers without much interest. He's struggled this year at the Double-A level.

Tigers designated LHP Kelvin De La Cruz for assignment.
The Tigers needed the extra spot on the 40-man roster after the trade for Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante. De La Cruz has been ineffective at Double-A this year, holding a 4.86 ERA over 19 games -- 17 starts.

Ramos missed a couple weeks last month with the same injury. He doesn't think the strain is too bad, but it's possible the Nats will play it safe and hold him out longer this time around.

Danny Espinosa has been playing with a small fracture in his right wrist for the past month.
It's actually a loose bone chip in his hand. The injury stems from when he was hit by a pitch from Paul Maholm on April 14 and certainly explains his struggles. Espinosa hopes to avoid a trip to the disabled list and possible surgery, but the Nationals plan to rest him for a few days. Steve Lombardozzi will fill in at second base for the time being.

Jayson Werth (hamstring) will not be ready for activation from the disabled list on Friday and could be sidelined for as much as two more weeks.
Nationals manager Davey Johnson said he received an "alarming" report on Werth Monday, which obviously doesn't sound good. The outfielder experienced a setback with his hamstring during a rehab game last week and has yet to return to game action. He was slated to see a specialist over the weekend and evidently didn't receive good news. Roger Bernadina and Tyler Moore will continue to be the primary fill-ins for Werth.

Ross Detwiler (back) played catch Thursday and will throw a bullpen session Saturday.
Detwiler left his start on May 15 with lower back spasms, but managed to avoid a stint on the disabled list. Barring any setbacks, he will return to the rotation Tuesday against the Orioles.

Ryan Mattheus is expected to be sidelined 4-6 weeks with a fractured right hand.
Mattheus won't require surgery, but since the injury is to his pitching hand he can't do a whole lot while out. He'll have to build his arm strength back up once out of his cast.

Christian Garcia (forearm) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend with Double-A Harrisburg.
Garcia has been shut down since the early part of spring training with a partial tendon tear in his right forearm, but he's ready to return to game action. The Nationals were planning to stretch him out as a starter prior to the injury, but he'll pitch in relief for the time being.
