The Pirates had to clear a roster spot for Francisco Liriano's return from the DL, so Welker will be sent down. He failed to appear in a game during his brief callup.

Welker has allowed just one unearned run over 16 innings of work this season while posting a 16/8 K/BB ratio. He'll provide a fresh arm for the bullpen.

Welker put together a nice year between Double- and Triple-A this season, posting a 2.29 ERA over 41 appearances. He'll have a shot at a bullpen spot next spring.

Pirates optioned RHP Duke Welker to Double-A Altoona.
Welker tossed one scoreless inning in his only appearance this spring. The 26-year-old right-hander was added to the 40-man roster in November after posting a 2.76 ERA and 50/26 K/BB ratio over 62 innings as a reliever last season between High-A Bradenton and Double-A Altoona. Baseball America did not include him among the organization's Top 30 prospects over the winter.

d'Arnaud has been sidelined since undergoing left thumb surgery late in spring training. He figures to need a few weeks' worth of rehab at-bats but could be optioned to Triple-A after that.

That's assuming he gets through bullpen sessions on Tuesday and Friday with no issues. McDonald is slated to go four innings and/or throw 65 pitches for Altoona, so he'll need at least one additional rehab start before being activated. He's not a given to rejoin the rotation once healthy.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Thursday that Charlie Morton (elbow, shoulder) will make three more minor league rehab starts.
Morton's rehab from Tommy John surgery was recently halted due to some shoulder soreness, but he returned to game action Thursday with Double-A Altoona and gave up two runs in four innings. If all goes well, he could join the Pirates' rotation in the early part of June.

Karstens, currently working his way back from shoulder inflammation, gave up one run in three innings Monday in his first rehab outing with High-A Bradenton. He could join the Pirates by early June, though it isn't clear what his role will be.
