Reds recalled RHP JJ Hoover from Triple-A Louisville.
He'll take the place of the injured Bill Bray (groin) on the active roster. Hoover, who was acquired from the Braves earlier this month for Juan Francisco, had a 2.00 ERA and 17/6 K/BB ratio over nine innings with Triple-A Louisville. He'll probably start out in middle relief, but could work his way into a set-up role eventually.

Hoover, 24, has started and relieved in the minors, but he pitched more in relief in 2011 and that's probably his role over the long haul. The right-hander posted a 2.64 ERA and 117/40 K/BB ratio over 105 2/3 innings this season between Double- and Triple-A last season.

Braves purchased the contract of RHP J.J. Hoover from Triple-A Gwinnett.
He is now protected from December's Rule 5 Draft. Hoover, 24, posted a 2.64 ERA and 117/40 K/BB ratio over 105 2/3 innings this season between Double- and Triple-A. The Braves shifted him into more of a relief role in 2011, which is likely where his future lies.

Rolen was placed on the disabled list earlier this month with a strained left shoulder and has yet to resume swinging a bat. Reds manager Dusty Baker said on Saturday that he's not sure when the 37-year-old third baseman will be ready to return. With his future very much in doubt, Todd Frazier makes for a smart pickup in deeper mixed formats.

Nick Masset (shoulder) made 30 throws from a distance of 60 feet on Thursday.
It was his first throwing session since being shut down in mid-April with renewed shoulder soreness. "I was about as encouraged as I could be for throwing on the first day," said Masset. He's scheduled to make another 30 throws Friday. There is no timetable for his return.

Bill Bray (groin) remains without a timetable.
Bray made a rehab appearance with Triple-A Louisville last month, but has been strictly working at extended spring training, and recently reported a setback. "We're trying to get him through that," GM Walt Jocketty said. "His mechanics got out of whack because of the [groin] injury. Now he's having problems with his lower back."

Ryan Madson's rehab from Tommy John surgery began Tuesday.
"It’s Day One of rehab," Madson said. "It’s the first day I’ve been out of my brace. It feels good." Madson, of course, will miss all of the 2012 season, but he's hoping to be ready for the start of 2013. He'll be a free agent this winter
