Shelby Miller coughed up three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings in the Cardinals' loss to the Padres Monday.
He struck out five and walked three. It was the second consecutive start in which Miller labored and was pulled after 5 2/3 innings, tallying 96 pitches against the Mets on Wednesday and 107 this evening. Undoubtedly, Miller must learn how to be more efficient. That will come in time. He already has down the dominate-major-league-brutes thing, posting a 1.74 ERA and 0.93 WHIP over nine starts.

Shelby Miller tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in the Cardinals' 4-2 win over the Mets on Wednesday.
Miller needed 96 pitches to get through those five-plus frames and was left with a no-decision, but all in all it was another dominant outing from the 22-year-old. He held the Mets to four hits and one walk while striking out six and now boasts a 1.40 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 57/12 K/BB ratio in 51 1/3 innings this season. The talented young right-hander will try to keep it rolling next week in San Diego.

Shelby Miller completely shut down the Rockies on Friday, striking out 13 batters in a one-hit shutout as part of a 3-0 win.
Miller allowed a broken-bat single to Eric Young, Jr. to begin the ballgame, but he sat down the next 27 batters he faced. It doesn't get much better than that. The rookie right-hander hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his seven starts this season and holds a dominant 1.58 ERA and 51/11 K/BB ratio over 45 2/3 innings. It hasn't taken him long to emerge as a potential fantasy ace.

Shelby Miller spun six innings of one-run ball Friday in a 6-1 win over the Brewers.
Miller scattered seven hits (all singles) and one walk while striking out five batters. The lone run scored on a sacrifice fly in his final inning of work. The rookie right-hander now owns a shiny 1.96 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 38/11 K/BB ratio in 36 2/3 innings across his first six starts this season. He has all the makings of a future front-line starter.

Jaime Garcia was diagnosed with a 30-40 percent tear of the labrum in his left shoulder.
Dr. James Andrews recommended surgery and reportedly expressed amazement that Garcia pitched as well as he did earlier this season under the circumstances. The Cardinals' team doctor will perform the shoulder procedure. It's safe to say that Garcia will not contribute in a meaningful way for the rest of the 2013 season.

Jake Wesbrook (elbow) played catch on flat ground on Friday.
The encouraging news is that he said his elbow felt fine afterwards. He attempted to throw a from a mound for the first time on Wednesday, but had to cut the session short after feeling lingering pain in his elbow. He's not on a specific throwing program at the moment, they'll continue to play it day-by-day based on how he's feeling. He's still not anywhere close to returning to the rotation.

Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) threw a successful bullpen session on Friday.
The Cardinals are considering allowing Carpenter to throw to live hitters on Tuesday as the next step in his recovery. While he's far from a sure thing, it looks like he's making tangible progress toward joining the Cardinals' rotation. Assuming no setbacks, he could return around the end of June.

Fernando Salas received a shot Thursday to help the inflammation in his right shoulder.
Salas doesn't have any structural damage, but the Cardinals will shut him down for a while and hope the shot helps to speed his recovery along. There's no timetable for his return.
