Jose Lobaton, who entered the day with a .188 average and slugging percentage this spring, went 3-for-3 and hit his first homer Saturday against the Twins.
Lobaton has been penciled into the backup catcher role since he's out of options, yet we'd be quite surprise if he didn't clear waivers if the Rays went that route. The Rays just aren't going to get much offensively from their catchers again this year.

Jose Lobaton went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and four RBI in Wednesday's rout of the Orioles.
Lobaton "plated" a run with a first-inning HBP before taking Matt Lindstrom deep for a three-run bomb in the fifth. The blast was his first of the season, and first in 59 career major-league games. Needless to say, he's about as far off the fantasy radar as one can get.

Rays activated C Jose Lobaton from the 15-day disabled list.
Lobaton missed over a month with soreness in his right (throwing) shoulder. The 27-year-old catcher was batting .200/.333/.300 through his first 12 plate appearances this season. He carries no fantasy value.

Jose Lobaton (shoulder) is likely a week away from being activated from the disabled list.
Lobaton has been on the disabled list since mid-April with right shoulder soreness. The 27-year-old backstop is 2-for-18 (.111) over six rehab games with High-A Charlotte and Double-A Montgomery. Jose Molina and Chris Gimenez will continue to split catching duties for now.

Rays placed LHP David Price on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left triceps muscle.
Price suffered the injury Wednesday night in his start against the Red Sox. An MRI taken shortly after his exit showed no major damage and the Rays are optimistic that he will only miss a few turns in the rotation, but nothing is certain quite yet. Jake Odorizzi and Chris Archer are the primary candidates to replace Price.

Gomes had been pitching well for Tampa, putting up a 1.03 WHIP and 16/2 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be out. Josh Lueke has replaced him on the roster.

Rays transferred RHP Jeff Niemann from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Jeff Beliveau. Niemann underwent shoulder surgery last week and is unlikely to return this season.

Rays purchased the contract of RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo, placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Oviedo is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and will miss most, if not all, of the 2013 season. The Rays obviously have decided he's worth hanging onto in hopes he can contribute in 2014.
