John Axford converted his 48th consecutive regular-season save on Sunday.
It is the fourth longest streak in the history of baseball. Axford nearly lost the streak Sunday, putting runners on first and third with a 3-2 lead against the Cardinals and no outs. He wiggled free from the jam, striking out David Freese and Yadier Molina and having Carlos Beltran gunned down trying to steal second. While he is only six saves away from tying Tom Gordon for the second longest streak of all-time, he has a ways to go to catch Eric Gagne (84).

John Axford nailed down his first save of the season Monday, allowing a hit and a walk but striking out two batters in 2/3 of an inning against the Cubs.
The Brewers entered the half inning with a four-run lead, but Manny Parra, Tim Dillard and some shoddy defense created the save situation for Axford, who struck out Starlin Castro with the bases loaded to end it. He also walked a couple in a non-save situation Sunday, but we're not worried about him. Axford will be an elite closer again.

John Axford gave up his second earned run in his final pre-season tune-up on Wednesday.
The Brewers closer finishes with a 1.86 ERA in 9 2/3 innings. Eight of his last nine outs have come via the K.

Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that the Brewers continue to discuss an extension with the agent for closer John Axford.
While a deal doesn't appear imminent, Axford has previously said that he doesn't consider Opening Day as a deadline on talks. The 28-year-old is expected to qualify for arbitration for the first time this winter as a Super Two player.

Mat Gamel underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.
Gamel also had surgery to repair a debridement of the lateral meniscus. He will miss the rest of the season. Travis Ishikawa, Taylor Green, Corey Hart and Brooks Conrad have all seen time at first base since his injury and the Brewers could eventually go outside the organization for a more stable solution.

It's just a procedural move. Gonzalez underwent season-ending surgery for a torn ACL about one week ago.

Chris Narveson underwent successful surgery Tuesday to repair the labrum and rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder.
Narveson will need nine months to recover, so he will miss the rest of the season and possibly the early part of spring training next year. The 30-year-old southpaw has made 28 starts for the Brewers in each of the past two seasons and will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

Brewers placed RHP Marco Estrada on the 15-day disabled list with a right quad strain.
Estrada suffered the injury on Wednesday night while running the bases. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told a radio station in Milwaukee on Thursday morning that the 28-year-old right-hander will miss 3-4 starts. It's not yet clear who will be asked to fill in.
