Rafael Dolis took a loss after giving up a run in a tie game Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Dolis now has two blown saves and two losses to go along with his win and three saves this month. However, he didn't lose any ground to James Russell today, not after Russell gave up a homer to Matt Carpenter in the eighth inning.

Rafael Dolis pitched a perfect ninth against the Braves to earn a save Wednesday.
James Russell set him up with a scoreless eighth. We're not big believers in Dolis, but given Carlos Marmol's performance the last year, there's no reason for the Cubs to be in any kind of hurry to go back to the veteran. Dolis is 3-for-4 saving games, and his one blown save came after Marmol left him in a jam.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum indicated that Carlos Marmol won't necessarily get his closer job back if Rafael Dolis and/or James Russell are pitching well.
"I'm not going to make change to make change," Sveum said. "If Dolis is doing well and Russell is doing well in that role, I won't make change to make change." As erratic as Marmol is, he's still the Cubs' best option for the closer role. Dolis and Russell are unexciting options, and we don't expect them to be in the ninth inning over the long haul.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum said that he would prefer to stay away from using Rafael Dolis on Monday night.
Dolis threw 25 pitches over two scoreless innings Sunday against the Dodgers, so Sveum will likely play the matchups in a potential save situation. Kerry Wood, James Russell and even Carlos Marmol could be under consideration.

Cubs placed C Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a slight tear in his left meniscus.
He'll need arthroscopic surgery, which will sideline him for around three weeks. The Cubs acquired Koyie Hill from the Reds earlier in the day for depth and officially purchased his contract from the minors. With Steve Clevenger (oblique) still out and Welington Castillo out for a week with a mild MCL sprain in his right knee, Hill and Blake Lalli will share catching duties for now.

Steve Clevenger (oblique) went 0-for-2 on Wednesday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Iowa.
He also played four innings behind the plate. Clevenger should be ready rejoin the Cubs within the next few days and figures to get a good amount of playing time with Geovany Soto and Welington Castillo both sidelined.

Carlos Marmol (hamstring) threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.
If he wakes up feeling no abnormal discomfort on Thursday morning, Marmol should be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday night with Triple-A Iowa. The 28-year-old right-hander is aiming to return to the Cubs' bullpen by next weekend. He is sure to be eased back into high-leverage relief appearances.

Cubs placed RHP Marcos Mateo on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Mateo came down with a bit of soreness in his forearm near the end of spring training. He missed a majority of 2011 with forearm troubles, so the Cubs are going to play it as safe as possible with the righty reliever.
