Jose Veras lost his arbitration hearing against the Brewers and was awarded a $2 million salary for 2012.
Veras requested a $2.38 million salary when arbitration figures were exchanged last month and stated his case in a hearing on Monday, but the three-person panel of arbitrators ultimately ruled in the team's favor. The 31-year-old right-hander was acquired by the Brewers in December for Casey McGehee after posting a solid 3.80 ERA and 79/34 K/BB ratio over 71 innings in Pittsburgh last season.

Mat Gamel underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.
Gamel also had surgery to repair a debridement of the lateral meniscus. He will miss the rest of the season. Travis Ishikawa, Taylor Green, Corey Hart and Brooks Conrad have all seen time at first base since his injury and the Brewers could eventually go outside the organization for a more stable solution.

Chris Narveson underwent successful surgery Tuesday to repair the labrum and rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder.
Narveson will need nine months to recover, so he will miss the rest of the season and possibly the early part of spring training next year. The 30-year-old southpaw has made 28 starts for the Brewers in each of the past two seasons and will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

Brewers placed RHP Marco Estrada on the 15-day disabled list with a right quad strain.
Estrada suffered the injury on Wednesday night while running the bases. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told a radio station in Milwaukee on Thursday morning that the 28-year-old right-hander will miss 3-4 starts. It's not yet clear who will be asked to fill in.
