Giants prospect outfielder Gary Brown is back in the lineup for Double-A Richmond on Thursday after being hit in the head with a bat earlier this week.
Good news. Brown was hit with a backswing during batting practice, but fortunately all tests came back negative. The 23-year-old outfielder is hitting .285/.346/.402 with seven home runs, 37 RBI, 30 stolen bases and a .749 OPS in 113 games at the Double-A level this season and is a possibility to be called up to the majors when rosters expand in September.

Gary Brown has been invited to major league spring training.
A first round pick last summer, Brown did not light the world on fire in his first partial season in the minors, amassing seven hits and 12 strikeouts in 44 at-bats. Even a pitcher would cringe at those numbers. He'll need another one-to-many years in the minors before garnering serious attention.

The Giants have agreed to terms with first-round pick OF Gary Brown.
Brown, 21, was selected No. 24 overall in June's draft. The Cal State Fullerton product has signed for a bonus of $1.45 million. Brown is still a bit raw defensively, but his plus-speed projects him to be a potential top-of-the-order type in the big leagues.

Marco Scutaro (thumb) said he expects to return to the Giants' lineup "soon."
"Soon," Scutaro said Monday. "Tomorrow. Next day... depends on how the finger reacts (from day to day)." Scutaro hasn't played since last Tuesday after being diagnosed with "mallet finger" as a result of a hit by pitch. The injury can often take 6-8 weeks to fully recover from, but Scutaro will try to play through it.

Sandoval has been on the DL for nearing a week due to a left foot strain. The Giants anticipate him being ready for activation on June 26, the first day he's eligible.

Ryan Vogelsong will have an exam on Tuesday in hopes that he'll be allowed to remove two of the five pins from his surgically-repaired right hand.
"Hopefully there's some pins coming out tomorrow," he said Monday. "That's the plan, but obviously I don't know for sure until I get some X-rays tomorrow and see how things are healing." If Vogelsong is able to get the pins removed, he'll begin additional mobility exercises. The Giants are hoping to get him back in late July.

Surkamp, who is making his way back from Tommy John surgery, is expected to spend three weeks in the San Jose rotation. The left-hander could be an option for the Giants in a month or so.
