Twins optioned OF Rene Tosoni to Triple-A Rochester.
Tosoni went 1-for-15 with three walks and three strikeouts this spring in the Grapefruit League. It wasn't enough to earn him a spot on the Opening Day bench.

Rene Tosoni hit a grand slam off Vin Mazzaro in the sixth inning Tuesday to push the Twins to a 7-4 win over the Royals.
With a victory on Wednesday, the Twins will avoid a 100-loss season. Tosoni has hit two homers over the last three games, but make no mistake: He has no business DH'ing for a major league team as he did Tuesday night. He's batting a putrid .202/.276/.345 through 168 at-bats despite riding an eight-game hitting streak. Tosoni figures to be right on the borderline to hold on to a spot on the Twins' 40-man roster this winter. The 25-year-old doesn't project as even a platoon option, and he probably doesn't offer enough defensively to stick as a bench player.

Rene Tosoni went 3-for-4 and delivered a game-winning double for the Twins in the bottom of the ninth Thursday against the Mariners.
Tosoni knocked in Trevor Plouffe to end a 3-2 game. It was his first three-hit game as a major leaguer, and it raised his average from .174 to .190. He figures to be right on the borderline to hold on to a spot on the Twins' 40-man roster this winter. The 25-year-old doesn't project as a regular, and he probably doesn't offer enough defensively to stick as a bench player.

Rene Tosoni returned to action as a pinch-hitter on Monday, flying out to third base in the eighth inning.
Tosoni missed Sunday's game with the flu. Of course, with a .164 batting average through 146 at-bats -- and with one hit in his last 28 at-bats -- another day off couldn't hurt.

Twins placed RHP Nick Blackburn on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad.
Blackburn battled the injury throughout Wednesday's start against the Tigers and was rocked for six earned runs in just two innings. The Twins need to get him right, which could take around three weeks. Blackburn has an 8.37 ERA and 1.77 WHIP through seven starts this season. It was originally announced that Doumit was heading to the disabled list, but he's merely day-to-day with a left calf strain.

Updating a previous item, Scott Baker underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday instead of just having a cleanup of the scar tissue in his flexor pronator as originally reported.
It's a significant difference, as Baker would likely have entered spring training healthy if he only had the flexor pronator cleaned out. Now, he'll almost surely be sidelined into the 2013 season. An MRI hadn't showed any damage to Baker's ulnar collateral ligament, but Dr. David Altcheck discovered damage while the righty was opened up and went ahead with the procedure.

Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.com reports that Alex Burnett could be headed to the disabled list due to right elbow discomfort.
Burnett's elbow started bothering him following his appearance Wednesday in Chicago. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Deolis Guerra and Lester Oliveros are the candidates to be recalled to take his spot on the roster.

Kyle Waldrop (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Fort Myers Saturday.
Waldrop began the season on the disabled list with a right elbow strain. The Twins haven't said how many rehab outings he'll need, but he should certainly be ready before the end of the month if he doesn't have any setbacks. He's not lock to be added to the major league roster, though.
