Brian Dinkelman went 3-for-4 with a homer, four RBI and a walk in the Twins' 11-6 defeat of the Pirates on Thursday.
Dinkelman was removed from the Twins' 40-man roster at the end of last season, only to be re-signed to a minor league contract. Versatility is his biggest asset, and the Twins are giving him time in the outfield while they're still uncertain about how they'll handle right field. Realistically, he's a 25th man at best. Ron Gardenhire, though, has a history of giving 25th men too much playing time.

The move clears him from the Twins' 40-man roster. Dinkelman, 27, made his major league debut this season, batting .301/.346/.315 with zero homers and a .661 OPS over 78 plate appearances. He is a .271 career hitter in the minor leagues.

Twins placed RHP Nick Blackburn on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad.
Blackburn battled the injury throughout Wednesday's start against the Tigers and was rocked for six earned runs in just two innings. The Twins need to get him right, which could take around three weeks. Blackburn has an 8.37 ERA and 1.77 WHIP through seven starts this season. It was originally announced that Doumit was heading to the disabled list, but he's merely day-to-day with a left calf strain.

Updating a previous item, Scott Baker underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday instead of just having a cleanup of the scar tissue in his flexor pronator as originally reported.
It's a significant difference, as Baker would likely have entered spring training healthy if he only had the flexor pronator cleaned out. Now, he'll almost surely be sidelined into the 2013 season. An MRI hadn't showed any damage to Baker's ulnar collateral ligament, but Dr. David Altcheck discovered damage while the righty was opened up and went ahead with the procedure.

Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.com reports that Alex Burnett could be headed to the disabled list due to right elbow discomfort.
Burnett's elbow started bothering him following his appearance Wednesday in Chicago. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Deolis Guerra and Lester Oliveros are the candidates to be recalled to take his spot on the roster.

Kyle Waldrop (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Fort Myers Saturday.
Waldrop began the season on the disabled list with a right elbow strain. The Twins haven't said how many rehab outings he'll need, but he should certainly be ready before the end of the month if he doesn't have any setbacks. He's not lock to be added to the major league roster, though.
