Ryan Cook tore the nail on his right middle finger during Thursday's game.
Cook was examined by a team trainer, but stayed in the game and earned his first major league victory. While it was clearly painful, it doesn't sound like a long-term concern. The 24-year-old right-hander has an 18/10 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 scoreless innings this season and could eventually be in line for save chances.

Ryan Cook has yielded just three hits and no runs through 16 2/3 innings of relief this season.
He has also fanned 16 batters and is sporting a 0.66 WHIP. Cook is probably next in line for saves should veteran lefty Brian Fuentes struggle in his new role.
May 14 - 10:01 AM
Athletics acquired RHPs Ryan Cook and Jarrod Parker and OF Collin Cowgill from the Diamondbacks for RHP Trevor Cahill, LHP Craig Breslow and cash considerations.
Cook had a successful transition to the bullpen this past season in the minors, posting a 2.21 ERA and 62/22 K/BB ratio over 61 innings between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno. The 24-year-old right-hander wasn't nearly as effective in his first taste of the big leagues, posting an ugly 7.04 ERA over 12 appearances, but Oakland obviously sees something here. He'll likely compete for a bullpen job during spring training.
Fri, Dec 9, 2011 08:19:00 PM
Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports that the Athletics will also likely receive right-hander Ryan Cook from the Diamondbacks as part of the Trevor Cahill deal.
Oakland will receive Cook, Jarrod Parker and Collin Cowgill in exchange for Cahill and Craig Breslow. Cook, 24, had an ugly 7.04 ERA in 12 appearances with Arizona this season, but profiles as a pretty nice relief prospect. Still, we figured Oakland would aim higher with the third piece, perhaps asking for either left-hander David Holmberg or left-hander Patrick Corbin. They obviously did well to get Parker and Cowgill should start in their outfield right away, but this is a disappointing return.

Brandon Inge (groin) did 14-15 sprints on Tuesday and is scheduled to do more running Wednesday.
Inge was placed on the disabled list 10 days ago with a strained left groin. He's optimistic about returning when he's first eligible Monday. The veteran third baseman has five home runs and 17 RBI in 11 games since joining the A's.

Scott Sizemore underwent successful surgery on his left knee Wednesday morning.
Sizemore was expected to open the season as the A's starting third baseman, but he tore the ACL in his left knee early in camp and has been ruled out for the entire 2012 season. However, he's fully expected to be ready for spring training next year.

Yoenis Cespedes will change the way he grips a bat in time for his return from the disabled list.
Cespedes used to nestle the knob of the bat in the palm of his hand, but the A's think that may have caused the muscle strain that sent him to the disabled list and want him to stop. "It's not like Yoenis has an easy swing; he swings the bat hard," manager Bob Melvin said. "This is proactive." Cespedes should be ready by early June.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that the team is not "locked into" activating Manny Ramirez on May 30.
Ramirez is eligible to join the A's on May 30, but the team wants him to get around 40 at-bats in the minors and show that he can produce offensively. He's 3-for-8 with two walks over his first three games with Triple-A Sacramento.

Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) is scheduled to resume throwing later this week and is expected to be ready for activation when first eligible on June 2.
Obviously, we won't know for sure if he'll be ready then until we see how he feels after picking up a ball again. But, the A's seem optimistic and McCarthy himself said when he went on the DL that he wouldn't be out long. Feel free to scoop him up in fantasy leagues if he's been dropped.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) has currently halted his throwing program.
Braden had been playing catch often, but the A's have decided he needs to build up more shoulder strength before throwing again. He remains without a timetable for return, but we almost surely won't see him before the All-Star break.

Brett Anderson
D.L.
Brett Anderson (elbow) will be shut down for a few days with forearm tightness.
It's not a huge concern at this point, given he's coming back from Tommy John surgery. If all goes as scheduled, he could rejoin Oakland's rotation as soon as late June or early July.
