Corey Brock of MLB.com hears that the Padres will announce Friday that they have signed first-round pick Max Fried.
Fried, a high school left-hander out of California, was selected No. 7 overall in last Monday's First-Year Player Draft. Dan Hayes of the North County Times reports that he'll get the recommended slot value of $3 million.

Padres selected high-school LHP Max Fried with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2012 draft.
Widely considered the top high-school lefty in this year's draft class, Fried doesn't have an overpowering fastball, but boasts excellent command and secondary pitches. A wiry 6-foot-4, 170 pounds, however, he will need to fill out his frame as he refines his pitches on the farm. Fried has drawn (loose) comparisons to Barry Zito.

Suspended
Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson.
Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.

Logan Forsythe (foot) took batting practice on the field Thursday.
It's the first time he's done so since plantar fasciitis in his right foot sent him to the DL prior to the season. Forsythe also took ground balls before Thursday's game. "He's on the field doing baseball activities stuff, so he's on the way back," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He's on the mend." The team hasn't revealed a timetable for Forsythe, but he should be ready sometime next month if all goes well.

Cameron Maybin (wrist) could begin a rehab assignment Friday.
Maybin was recently cleared to resume hitting activities and hasn't had any setbacks. On the disabled list since April 17, he's now close to returning to the Padres. Maybin was hitting just .091/.167/.121 with no home runs prior to the injury but offers plenty of fantasy potential when he's healthy.

Clayton Richard (illness) will make a second rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Richard struck out eight over six innings of one-run ball Thursday for Tucson, but the Padres want him to have another tune-up. "He feels good about where he is right now, how his arm feels and how he feels physically in general, from the whole bad virus he contracted," manager Bud Black said. Assuming Richard feels fine in his next outing, he could rejoin the rotation as soon as next weekend.

Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery.
Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break.

Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break.

Kelly will undergo Tommy John surgery during the first week of April. Obviously, he won't be making any contribution this season.
