James Loney continued his hot hitting Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a homer as the Rays beat the Padres 4-2.
Loney is now batting .376/.429/.560 with three home runs and 20 RBI in 37 games. The hotness seems doubtful to last for much longer, but the 29-year-old first baseman deserves to be owned and started in most standard fantasy leagues while he's in this groove. Loney, 29, is a .285/.342/.423 career hitter in the majors.

James Loney hit a two-run homer as part of a six-run second inning and the Rays beat the Padres on Saturday.
The Rays broke the game open off rookie starter Burch Smith in that second frame. Loney has had a bit of a career resurrection in the early going for Tampa Bay and is now hitting .371/.426/.533 with two homers, 19 RBI and two steals through his first 36 games. While he can’t continue at this pace, fantasy owners should continue to ride him while he’s hot.

James Loney went 3-for-4 with two doubles in Friday's loss to the White Sox.
It was Loney's third three-hit game of the season. While the signing was understandably mocked this offseason, the 28-year-old is hitting .358 (19-for-53) with a .424 on-base percentage through 23 games. The power isn't going to be there, but those in AL-only leagues could do worse at the moment.

Sometimes a blind squirrel finds a nut, and even more rarely, sometimes James Loney gets three hits. Loney had two doubles, driving in three runs and raising his average to .242 in the process. Despite the mirage, Loney shouldn't be trusted outside of deep AL-only leagues.

Rays placed LHP David Price on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left triceps muscle.
Price suffered the injury Wednesday night in his start against the Red Sox. An MRI taken shortly after his exit showed no major damage and the Rays are optimistic that he will only miss a few turns in the rotation, but nothing is certain quite yet. Jake Odorizzi and Chris Archer are the primary candidates to replace Price.

Gomes had been pitching well for Tampa, putting up a 1.03 WHIP and 16/2 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be out. Josh Lueke has replaced him on the roster.

Rays transferred RHP Jeff Niemann from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Jeff Beliveau. Niemann underwent shoulder surgery last week and is unlikely to return this season.

Rays purchased the contract of RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo, placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Oviedo is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and will miss most, if not all, of the 2013 season. The Rays obviously have decided he's worth hanging onto in hopes he can contribute in 2014.
