Bears coach Lovie Smith said he is not interested in free agent CB Shawn Springs.
Smith spent one season as the Ohio State defensive backs coach while Springs was in Columbus, so the connection is there. But with Charles Tillman and Zack Bowman looking good as starters, the Bears will see if Tim Jennings and Josh Moore pan out as depth first. Springs also needs to prove his knee is healthy before a team signs him.

Updating a previous item, Shawn Springs failed a physical before he was released by the Patriots on Tuesday.
This explains the timing of Springs' release. The veteran dealt with a knee injury all last year and surgery after the season. He was never at full speed, according to beat writer Ian Rapoport. Springs will have to prove his health before he gets nibbles on the market at age 35.

The Eagles are not interested in free agent Shawn Springs, according to beat writer Jeff McLane.
There were some whispers that the Eagles would be interested, but it looks like they are going to roll with Ellis Hobbs and Joselio Hanson as their No. 2 and 3 corners. Macho Harris may also shift from safety to a nickel role.

Shawn Springs, released by the Patriots Tuesday, told NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora that he still plans on playing football in 2010.
"I'm not retiring," Springs emphasized. The declining Springs was a questionable signing by the Pats last offseason, and he won't help on special teams. He'll have to find a team that values his ability to cover the slot and handle big receivers as a third or fourth corner. Beat writer Ian Rapoport does not expect Springs to be re-signed for less money by the Pats.

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

The Boston Herald confirms Rob Gronkowski's fourth left-forearm surgery will take place Monday at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Jesse Jupiter is expected to perform the procedure, with Patriots team Dr. Thomas Gill on hand. The surgeons will take "cultures" from Gronk's arm. If the cultures come back infection-free, a new plate will replace the one already in Gronkowski's arm and he'll begin a 10-11 week recovery timetable. If the cultures show Gronk's infection has lingered, "it's back to square one" and Gronkowski will likely miss regular season games.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.
