Retired LT Matt Light says there's a "zero percent" chance he ever plays again.
"Not in a bad way but when you close the door, it’s always good to keep walking," said Light. Making the rounds at ESPN, the 33-year-old Light also revealed he underwent 14 career surgeries in 11 seasons as an NFL player. Second-year pro Nate Solder is taking Light's place on the blindside in New England.

Retired LT Matt Light revealed Monday that he played through Crohn's disease for his entire 11-year career.
Crohn's is a bowel disease that affects the digestive system. Light says it factored into his retirement, and that he had a near-death experience in 2004. Light suffered complications from an operation to remove 13 inches of his intestine, and couldn't eat for a month. His weight dropped from 315 to 260 post-operation, holding him out of Patriots training camp until the third week. Incredibly, Light missed just six games over his final six seasons.

It's official. Turning 33 in June, Light walks away with three Super Bowl rings and five Super Bowl appearances in an 11-year career. Last year's first-rounder, Nate Solder, is expected to step in as Tom Brady's blindside protector.

Patriots LT Matt Light has retired from football.
Light didn't show for this week's voluntary workouts, and Profootballtalk.com confirmed via a league source that he's decided to hang 'em up. A three-time Pro Bowler and Tom Brady's longtime blindside protector, Light started 153 career games and was voted a first-team All Pro in 2007. He's not a Hall of Famer, but Light should make his way into the Patriots' Ring of Honor.

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

ESPN Boston confirms doctors are "confident" the infection in Rob Gronkowski's surgically-repaired arm has subsided.
They won't know for sure until they study samples taken during Gronkowski's Monday operation. If the samples confirm Gronk is infection-free, doctors will replace the metal plate in his arm. If everything goes to plan — a big if at this point — Gronk will then undergo "minor" back surgery in 3-4 weeks. Considering Gronk's recent health history, he should be considered highly questionable for Week 1.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.
