The family of Junior Seau will allow the deceased NFL star's brain to be studied by researchers, most likely at Boston University School of Medicine.
There are similarities between Seau's suicide and that of former Bears safety Dave Duerson, who also died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the chest. Researchers will seek evidence of brain damage as the result of concussions. ESPN reports the forensic pathologist who first identified chronic brain damage as a factor in the deaths of some NFL players has already flown to San Diego to take part in the autopsy.

Boston University researchers are attempting to obtain Junior Seau's brain for evidence of concussion-related trauma.
Seau shot himself in the chest, which has sparked speculation that he killed himself like Dave Duerson. Duerson, who committed suicide similarly, did so to "preserve" his brain for medical study. Seau's death has been formally ruled a suicide. He played 20 seasons in the league and passed on at age 43.

The North County Times reports that former Chargers and Patriots LB Junior Seau passed away Wednesday after a self-inflicted gunshot to the chest.
Seau's body was discovered by a housekeeper at his California home Wednesday. Seau was a 12-time Pro Bowler and is eligible for Hall of Fame enshrinement in 2015 after ending his playing career in 2009. He was voted first-team All-Pro six times. Seau should still be a shoo-in for the first ballot in Canton.

TMZ reports that former Patriots and Chargers LB Junior Seau was found dead Wednesday in his Oceanside (CA) home.
TMZ's report cites multiple law enforcement sources. Police are currently investigating the 43-year-old's death, but initial rumors are that it may have been a suicide. In October of 2010, Seau was arrested for felony spousal assault with injury after allegedly driving his SUV off a cliff in Carlsbad. Following the incident, Seau denied vehemently that he had attempted suicide.

The Patriots have tweaked Julian Edelman's contract, converting the majority of his workout bonus to a roster bonus.
Edelman is missing time during the offseason workout program and OTAs due to a reaggravation of the injury he suffered to his right foot at the end of last season. His status for the beginning of camp is also in question. Edelman is not a lock to make the Patriots' 53-man roster.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots "(don't) know" how serious Rob Gronkowski's back injury is.
"I wish I knew as much as you'd like me to know," were the words of owner Robert Kraft. Rapoport believes the Pats should consider placing Gronk on the reserve/PUP list, which would hold him out for the first six games of the season. Depending on how Gronk's expected back operation goes, they may not have a choice.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.
