Eagles DC Billy Davis said OLBs Trent Cole and Brandon Graham have been "outstanding" in their transitions from defensive end.
Cole and Graham have also seen some reps from the three-point stance that they are used to, and Davis acknowledged that his defense will use "multiple" fronts. Connor Barwin is the only experienced 3-4 outside 'backer on the roster, so Davis is going to have to get creative with his scheme. The Philadelphia Inquirer recently called Cole a "fish out of water" in the new defense.

The Philadelphia Inquirer calls OLB Trent Cole a "fish out of water" in the Eagles' new 3-4 defense.
If it wasn't for Cole's enormous contract, he'd already be gone. Cole has never played outside linebacker, and it's proving to be a chore to learn the nuances of the position. The Eagles are trying to force a square peg into a round hole, but they'd be charged with nearly $10 million in dead money by cutting Cole.

Eagles OLB Trent Cole's February hand surgery was performed to address multiple tendon tears and a snapped bone near his right wrist.
Cole says he played with the injury in 2011, but in 2012 "finally it snapped in half and I had to get some surgery." Cole turned in the worst year of his career last season, which -- in hindsight -- isn't surprising because pass rushers rely so much on hand usage. "I’ll straight up tell you I had a bad year," said 30-year-old Cole. "And it’s not going to happen again."

Eagles DE/OLB Trent Cole is trying to get down to 260 pounds in anticipation of moving to outside linebacker in the Eagles' new 3-4 scheme.
Cole has traditionally played around 270. Cole should start opposite Connor Barwin at outside linebacker, but is unlikely to drop back into coverage with any regularity. Cole — an eight-year veteran with 71 career sacks — should remain a pure pass rusher.

Eagles TE/H-back James Casey underwent arthroscopic surgery to clean out loose cartilage in his right knee.
Casey, who signed a three-year, $12M contract in March, will miss the rest of spring workouts. He is expected to be ready for training camp. It's a setback for a player trying to learn Chip Kelly's offense and competing for snaps with both Brent Celek and rookie Zach Ertz. Casey was barely on the TE2 radar anyway.
