Giants DC Perry Fewell indicated that Chase Blackburn will open training camp as the team's starting middle linebacker.
Fewell did say he anticipates "competition" at MIKE, naming Mark Herzlich, Greg Jones, and Keith Rivers as Blackburn's competitors. Blackburn is more of a fill-in, replacement-level middle linebacker, though he is an adequate run stuffer. It sounds like Michael Boley is staying on the weak side for now.

Giants agreed to terms with LB Chase Blackburn on a one-year contract.
Blackburn, 29 in June, closed out last season as the Giants' starting middle linebacker. While he won't retain the role, Blackburn came up with a huge interception of Tom Brady in Super Bowl XLVI and should earn a roster spot as a backup and special teamer. He finished 2011 with 26 tackles on defense.

The Giants have had "some discussions" with free agent LB Chase Blackburn about a return.
The Giants would have re-signed Blackburn by now, obviously, if they were intent on retaining him. Blackburn closed out last season as the Giants' starting middle linebacker. They want to get better at the position this year.

The Giants have yet to contact free agent LB Chase Blackburn about returning in 2012.
Close to a job teaching eighth-grade math, Blackburn came to the Giants' rescue in the Super Bowl run after being signed in late November. Although Blackburn hopes to re-sign, the Giants appear to be prioritizing Jonathan Goff instead.

NFL suspended Giants RB Andre Brown four games for violating the league's policy against performance enhancers.
Running back increasingly is becoming a major need area for the G-Men. Brown, 25, was set to make a hard push for a roster spot after battling injuries his first three seasons in the league. For his career, Brown has only two rushes in four appearances. The Giants may look early in the draft for a running back, perhaps eyeballing Boise State's Doug Martin at No. 32.

SportsCenter
Friday that there is optimism in the Giants' organization about Hakeem Nicks' (foot surgery) availability for the season opener.
The Giants are on a slightly shorter timeline than the rest of the league because they play the Cowboys in the Wednesday night NFL opener on September 5. Per Schefter, however, Giants doctors don't believe Nicks' fractured fifth metatarsal is a "dire" injury, and he could be back at some point in August. Nicks' injury caused an initial scare, but he sure seems likely to play in Week 1, barring setbacks. He's just not going to do much, if anything, in camp.

Giants WR Dan DePalma is recovering from offseason hip surgery.
There are no details on the procedure. An undersized (5-11/195) receiver from D-II West Chester (Pa.) University, DePalma played the role of Wes Welker as a practice squad player last year. Although Giants defenders tabbed DePalma as one of the toughest to cover, he remains a long-shot for the 53-man roster.

Ballard will start training camp as well as the regular season on the PUP list. Having signed Martellus Bennett to a one-year contract, the Giants aren't going to count on a contribution from Ballard until the 2013 season.

According to the New York Daily News, there's a "pretty good chance" Giants TE Travis Beckum (torn ACL) will be ready for the start of the regular season.
"If everything works out, yeah," Beckum said. Beckum is still only two months removed from surgery, so color us skeptical. Even with Jake Ballard (torn ACL) in danger of missing the entire year, the G-Men have little incentive to rush Beckum back after signing Martellus Bennett and drafting Adrien Robinson. Beckum remains a strong candidate for the PUP list.
