Smith was just claimed off waivers from the Cowboys a week ago, only to come down with an early-camp injury. The Panthers claimed OG Bryant Browning off waivers from the Rams to take Smith's roster spot.

Panthers claimed LB Kelvin Smith off waivers from the Cowboys.
This will be Smith's second go-around in Carolina. A seventh-round pick in 2007, he has appeared in just four career games. He's unlikely to make it five this year.

Bears signed LB Kelvin Smith, formerly of the Panthers.
Smith has spent time with the Dolphins, Giants, and Panthers over the past three seasons. He's just a camp body for the remainder of August.

Smith's injury is not yet known. He was signed off the practice squad to provide depth when Thomas Davis (ACL) was lost for the season three weeks ago.

The Panthers renegotiated Jonathan Stewart's contract in late January.
Stewart's fully guaranteed $1 million 2013 base salary was lowered to $715,000, while he received a $2.5 million "signing bonus." That money was culled from future bonuses in Stewart's six-year, $37.811 million deal. His $1.5 million 2014 base salary is also now fully guaranteed. It's further proof DeAngelo Williams will likely be a post-June 1 cut.

Pilares went down during Sunday's win over the Redskins and will need surgery. His second NFL season ends with two catches for 42 yards and nine kickoff returns for 216 yards. Joe Adams figures to carry the load in the return game going forward.
