Heitmann failed his physical. It's no surprise considering he was deemed unlikely to play football in 2011 due to neck surgery. Heitmann's career is in doubt and with David Baas now in New York, the Niners are desperate at center.

49ers LT Joe Staley revealed that C Eric Heitmann suffered his career-threatening neck injury in former coach Mike Singletary's infamous "nutcracker" drill.
Singletary was the only coach still using the drill, which was more common half a century ago. The nutcracker involves two like-sized players crashing into each other to gain leverage. Patrick Willis (ankle), Tarell Brown (toe), and David Baas (broken foot) also sustained injuries from the drill. Upon installing the nutcracker, Singletary labeled it "pretty foolproof." The players felt differently.

49ers C Eric Heitmann is unlikely to play football in 2011 after undergoing neck surgery recently.
It will be Heitmann's second lost season in a row; he missed 2010 with a fractured left fibula and the neck complications. The latest surgery was to repair a ruptured disk in the neck. (Free agent David Baas just got more leverage.) Heitmann's timetable for recovery has been optimistically set at six months. His agent says Heitmann's "hopes are to play as soon as he's cleared."

The status of 49ers C Eric Heitmann (beck) remains a "big question mark," according to the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows.
It has yet to be confirmed that Heitmann will be able to play in 2011, though his agent believes he will. Heitmann broke his leg in training camp last summer before suffering his neck injury, and played in zero games. Now 31, it wouldn't be the most surprising thing if he never plays another NFL down.

Kendall Hunter (Achilles surgery) still expects to be a full go for training camp.
Hunter, who blew out his left Achilles' tendon on Nov. 25, recently resumed sprint work. He won't participate in OTAs or minicamps, but claims he's on track to battle for reps behind Frank Gore come August. Still, it would be an awfully quick recovery for Hunter. Note that Mikel Leshoure's rehab from the same injury lasted roughly 13 months. Leshoure also lacked burst upon return.

Although the 49ers' medical exam of Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) yielded positive results according to Jim Harbaugh, the coach says Lattimore must take a "step back" in terms of cutting drills.
"The ACL looks really good for Marcus," insisted Harbaugh. "We're just going to have to take a step back in terms of the cutting because we want that inside of the knee, the lateral side of the knee to heal fully. But we're good." Lattimore conceded he'd be "fine" with sitting out the entire 2013 season. Harbaugh said the 49ers will determine his playing status at a later date.

Updating a previous item, coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Michael Crabtree's Achilles' tendon was "completely torn" during Tuesday's OTA practice, and the injury was to Crabtree's right Achilles'.
So this wasn't a partial tear like Terrell Suggs' April 2012 Achilles' injury. For bookkeeping, we like to know which side of Crabtree's body was injured, the full extent of the injury, and all dates associated with his recovery, in order to provide accurate timelines in the future. Crabtree underwent surgery on Wednesday, May 22. Per Harbaugh, the full Achilles' tear occurred when Crabtree was "coming in motion and just planted and started a route, and it felt like someone kicked him in the Achilles'." The 49ers hope to have Crabtree back around Week 12.

Mario Manningham (knee) believes he'll be ready for Week 1.
It's an optimistic assertion. Manningham tore his ACL and PCL during Week 16 last season, a devastating injury that most players need nine months to recover from. He won't be ready for the start of training camp and will be in a race to avoid the PUP list. The Niners can't count on Manningham while making plans to replace Michael Crabtree (Achilles').

Williams was facing an uphill battle to be ready for the offseason program, but he's reportedly on pace to return at the start of training camp. Manningham was never expected to participate in OTAs, and he's a candidate to start the season on the PUP list. Both will compete for roster spots.
