Grimes isn't putting a percentage on his recovery, but says he's "feeling good" and "being smart" in his rehab. Grimes will be 364 days removed from his injury when the Dolphins take on the Browns in Week 1.

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland told reporters Thursday that CB Brent Grimes (Achilles' surgery) is far enough along that he's "close" to being a participant in the club's offseason conditioning program.
Assuming Ireland's words can be taken at face value, Grimes should be all systems go before training camp. "He’s doing really well," said Ireland. "He’s almost to the point where he’s ready to participate in the offseason conditioning program." The Dolphins are counting on Grimes to be a starter this year.

Dolphins signed CB Brent Grimes to a one-year, $5.5 million contract.
The best remaining free agent cornerback is now off the board. Despite turning 30 later this year and coming off a torn Achilles' tendon, Grimes actually got one of the better contracts in this year's pathetic cornerback market. (To no one's surprise, the Dolphins paid above market value --

.) The deal includes $3 million in guaranteed money. When healthy, Grimes is one of the league's better cover corners and is a much needed upgrade for a Dolphins secondary that ranked 27th against the pass in 2012.

According to the Miami Herald, free agent Brent Grimes "remains on the radar" for the Dolphins, but "they're not breaking the bank for the guy."
Only the Dolphins, Browns, and perhaps Falcons appear to be in the mix for Grimes at this point. The Buccaneers have dropped out of the hunt. Per the Herald's Armando Salguero, the Fins "have some confidence" they'll win the Grimes sweepstakes, and the sides are "slowly" trying to make a deal happen.

Daniel Thomas believes he's a legitimate contender for the Dolphins' starting running back job.
Thomas must not be watching much of his own film. "I don’t know why (Lamar Miller) would have the inside track," Thomas said incredulously Tuesday. "It’s an open competition. Everybody has a fair shot. The best player is going to get the job. Nobody has a leg up." Thomas does admit he's been "inconsistent" since being the No. 62 overall pick of the 2011 draft. All signs suggest the Dolphins want and expect Miller to be their No. 1 back.
