49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Pierre Garcon's leadership is one of the reasons he wanted to sign him.
Shanahan said everyone can see Garcon is a good player, but his effort and how that affects the rest of the roster makes him even better. "Pierre's not going to say much, but you know he's going to go out there and fight every single play no matter the situation," Shanahan said. "That elevates everyone around him." Considering the state of the roster after two dreadful seasons in a row, that kind of leadership will be valuable. Garcon also has target monster potential in San Francisco.

49ers agreed to terms with Pierre Garcon, formerly of the Redskins, on a five-year, $47.5-million contract with $17 million fully guaranteed.
While it is being reported as a "five-year deal," the contract is really a two-year agreement with options the final three seasons. Still, it is a lot of money for a 30-year-old receiver, but Garcon's game should age well and he has a history of success in new coach Kyle Shanahan's offense -- he caught 113 passes while the pair were together with the Redskins in 2013. If the 49ers figure out the quarterback situation, Garcon could be a top-20 fantasy receiver in 2017.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the 49ers are "setting their sights" on free agent Pierre Garcon.
Kyle Shanahan is trying his best to make the 49ers a version of Redskins West. Working to acquire Kirk Cousins as his franchise quarterback, Shanahan could also be targeting Garcon and even DeSean Jackson as free agents. Garcon's first two seasons in D.C. were with Shanahan, and Garcon caught a career-high 113 balls in 2013 for 1,346 yards and five scores. If he lands in the Bay Area as Shanahan's starting "X" again, Garcon could be a top-20 fantasy receiver. Garcon turns 31 this year but looked to have plenty left in 2016.

Chad Dukes of 106.7 The Fan reports impending free agent Pierre Garcon requested a trade during the 2016 season.
The report was confirmed by ESPN's John Keim, who over the weekend wrote Garcon is "gone." The request along with the seeming lack of communication between the two sides over the last couple months suggests Keim is correct. The request also suggests the organizational dysfunction currently bubbling to the surface has been simmering behind the scenes for quite some time.

49ers GM John Lynch admitted the team was shopping TE Vance McDonald during the draft.
"That’s the reality of new regimes coming in, new schemes," Lynch said. "Nothing ended up happening, so Vance will come back and have an opportunity to compete." It always seemed odd ex-GM Trent Baalke was allowed to give McDonald a five-year, $35-million extension last December when it was clear he was on the way out, and now it looks like the new regime is stuck. It would cost San Francisco a little over $3.5 million against the cap to cut McDonald.
