The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Browns have no interest in trading for Patriots QB Ryan Mallett.
The Pats want at least a second-round pick for Mallett, and the Browns don't currently own a 2013 second-round pick. With the Browns apparently out of the mix for Mallett, it's possible they now set their sights on Geno Smith at No. 6 overall. The pre-draft buzz isn't boding well for Brandon Weeden.

Citing a source, the Boston Herald reports the Browns have contacted the Patriots -- again -- regarding the trade availability of Ryan Mallett.
Per the Herald's Jeff Howe, the Pats are asking for "at least" a second-round pick, which Cleveland doesn't currently have but could acquire if it traded down in round one. The Browns aren't going to give New England the sixth overall pick. Browns GM Mike Lombardi has long been infatuated with Mallett's talent. His big arm would also be an excellent fit in Rob Chudzinski's vertical attack.

Sources tell the Boston Globe that the odds are slightly in favor of the Patriots trading QB Ryan Mallett.
Multiple teams have contacted the Patriots this week about Tom Brady's talented backup. Per the Globe, New England has been "heavily scouting" quarterbacks in the leadup to the draft, adding more fuel to the fire. Mallett has long been linked to the Browns, where admirer Mike Lombardi is now the general manager. However, the Patriots reportedly would want a second-round pick in this year's draft or a first-rounder in 2014 for Mallett. It's a steep price to pay for a player with four career pass attempts in the NFL.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots won't trade Ryan Mallett for less than a first-round pick, or "maybe" a second.
Rapoport is a former Patriots beat reporter. The Pats are remarkably adept at pumping up their backup quarterbacks' value through the media, but it does stand to reason they'd want more than the third-round pick they originally spent on Mallett in any trade. We'd still guess the "maybe" on a second-rounder is closer "probably." Despite Tuesday's signing of 32-year-old backup Jason Campbell, we suspect Cleveland remains all ears on Mallett's availability.

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Rob Gronkowski's back surgery recovery is expected to take ten weeks.
There are about 16 weeks left before Week 1. Profootballtalk has reported the back surgery will occur roughly 3-4 weeks following Gronkowski's Monday arm procedure, putting a tentative return timetable at 2-3 weeks before the season, assuming all healing proceeds without setbacks. At this point, we can't expect Gronkowski to participate at all in the preseason, but he still has a shot to be ready for Opening Day. The Pats open Sunday, September 8 at Buffalo.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.
