Cam Newton is undergoing surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder Thursday.
The surgery was announced last week. Newton is expected to resume a limited throwing program 12 weeks after surgery and start throwing with the team in fourth months. That timeline makes him questionable for the start of training camp, and he could sit out the entire preseason. Newton should be ready for Week 1 if his rehab goes as planned.

Coach Ron Rivera admitted Cam Newton's confidence was "shook" last season.
Rivera said that Cam's confidence will have to be rebuilt this year. Newton was sacked 36 times and hit another 10 times as he threw. He also took a ton of licks as a runner. Fixing their offensive line will go a long way in rebuilding Newton. The Panthers signed LT Matt Kalil, but right tackle remains a question mark. The MVP in 2015, Newton is a big bounce-back candidate with Kelvin Benjamin a year removed from ACL surgery.

Cam Newton will undergo surgery on his throwing shoulder to repair a "partially torn rotator cuff," and is questionable for the start of training camp.
Newton first suffered the injury in Week 14. The team initially believed he would heal with rest and rehab, but instead he'll go under the knife on March 30. Newton will do no throwing for three months, and won't resume throwing with the team for four months. That's right around the start of camp. Newton could be highly limited in the preseason, and perhaps held out of exhibition action altogether. At least for now, his Week 1 status is not in doubt.

A 2015 UDFA, Byrd made his NFL debut in Week 17. He's expected to be ready for training camp, where he will compete for one of the team's final 53-man roster spots.

"He’s still in the rehab program," coach Ron Rivera said. "He’s been doing great. He’s there every day." The Panthers have been vague on a return date for their pivot man, saying only that he will be ready for Week 1. The 11th-year pro doesn't need OTAs, or even all of camp, to be ready for 2017.

Panthers LT Michael Oher has been accused of assaulting an Uber driver in Nashville.
Oher has been charged with misdemeanor assault. Oher is accused of knocking the driver to the ground after the driver "put his hand on Oher's face." The Panthers have said they are aware of the incident. The fact that Oher is being charged with a misdemeanor bodes well for his odds of avoiding league discipline. The bigger concern for Oher's 2017 is a 2016 that was wrecked by concussions.
