Stephen Burton caught three passes for 22 yards in Minnesota's Week 15 win over the Rams.
Burton entered Week 15 with just one catch on the season. The second-year pro will have to fight for a roster spot next summer.

According to Vikings coach Leslie Frazier, WR Stephen Burton hasn't done "anything" to separate himself so far in camp and preseason games.
Burton saw limited snaps in Friday's regular season tuneup. "When I look at the tape, we'll see how he did blocking and he did running around, but as a whole, we never gathered any rhythm offensively, so that also means he wasn't a big factor in what we were trying to do offensively." Burton is out of the mix for the starting job during Jerome Simpson's suspension, and on the roster bubble.

Stephen Burton "appears to be the front-runner" for the Vikings' fifth receiver spot.
Fourth-rounder Jarius Wright is likely locked in, and Michael Jenkins' salary cut gives him a better chance to stick. Burton's primary competition could be former CFL star Emmanuel Arcenaux, who has improved more than any player WRs coach George Stewart has coached in 25 years. Kerry Taylor and Bryan Walters are also in the mix. Burton could end up starting for the suspended Jerome Simpson in Week 1 if he makes the team.

According to coach Leslie Frazier, WR Stephen Burton started in place of Percy Harvin in Friday's preseason opener because the Vikings "need to learn more about Stephen in game situations."
Burton was targeted just two times against the 49ers, but managed to take his lone catch 52 yards. He also had a drop, however. "He had limited exposure a year ago," Frazier said. "(And) then with the injury to Greg (Childs), we really felt like we needed to find out more about him." Beat writer Tom Pelissero believes Burton could see time at split end while Jerome Simpson is suspended for the season's first three games.

GM Rick Spielman gives Christian Ponder "just as much credit for getting us in the playoffs" as Adrian Peterson.
Spielman was referring specifically to Ponder's play when the Vikings won their final four games of the regular season. During that time, he completed 60.6 percent of his passes and threw just one interception, but averaged a mere 157.5 yards per game and totaled four passing scores. These comments are another case of Spielman trying to pump up Ponder's confidence. He's ready to ride or die with his 2011 No. 12 overall pick.

Adrian Peterson said his goal for this season is to run for 2,500 yards.
Peterson rumbled for 2,097 last season even though he was coming off a knee reconstruction and playing through a sports hernia. In order to reach 2,500 yards, he'd need to average 156.25 yards per day over 16 games. It's not going to happen, but Peterson is set up for another run at Eric Dickerson's single-season record of 2,105 yards. Lead-blocker Jerome Felton and mauling tackle Phil Loadholt are both back and Peterson will be 21 months removed from his ACL tear by the time Week 1 rolls around.

Vikings WR Greg Childs (torn patellar tendons) has resumed sprinting and cutting.
"All the necessary things I need to be doing, I'm doing now," Childs said. "I still do my cuts and my runs full speed. There is no change in the way I run or the way I play. My routes are still the same." Despite the progress, Childs admits he's not close to 100 percent. The Vikings are operating under the assumption Childs "may never play a meaningful down in the NFL." So should fantasy owners.
