The NFL will review the Alfonzo Dennard case.
Commissioner Roger Goodell may want to suspend Dennard after the Pats' corner was sentenced to 30 days in jail for assaulting a police officer, but he's unlikely to be able to. When the incident happened, Dennard was not an NFL employee. It's a point the players association would argue vehemently. We fully expect Dennard to line up as a starter across from Aqib Talib come Week 1.

Patriots RCB Alfonzo Dennard was sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years' probation Thursday.
Dennard was found guilty of assaulting a police officer after a fight outside a Nebraska bar last April. However, the judge delayed his jail start date until March 1 of 2014, so he'll be available for the entire offseason program and regular season. The NFL is not expected to discipline Dennard because the incident occurred before he was in the league. It's another gamble that pays off for the Patriots, as Dennard was expected to be at least a second-round pick before the fight. Bill Belichick & Co. stole him in the seventh round.

Dennard was found guilty of assaulting a police officer, though the incident took place before he formally became an NFL player. According to the Boston Globe, the "general" sentence for a conviction like Dennard's in Nebraska is 90-180 days in jail. The Globe does not expect Dennard to face a league suspension.

The Boston Globe believes Patriots RCB Alfonzo Dennard is unlikely to face a suspension for his assault conviction because the incident took place before he was an NFL player.
Beat writer Greg Bedard believes the case differs from Terrelle Pryor's — where the NFL upheld a five-game ban initially handed down by the NCAA — because Pryor was expressly trying to circumvent punishment by entering the 2011 Supplemental Draft. Dennard was under neither NCAA nor NFL jurisdiction at the time of his April 2012 incident. Jets NT Kenrick Ellis wasn't suspended under circumstances similar to Dennard's in 2011. Dennard is also likely to escape jail time, going on probation instead.

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

The Boston Herald confirms Rob Gronkowski's fourth left-forearm surgery will take place Monday at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Jesse Jupiter is expected to perform the procedure, with Patriots team Dr. Thomas Gill on hand. The surgeons will take "cultures" from Gronk's arm. If the cultures come back infection-free, a new plate will replace the one already in Gronkowski's arm and he'll begin a 10-11 week recovery timetable. If the cultures show Gronk's infection has lingered, "it's back to square one" and Gronkowski will likely miss regular season games.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.
