Coach Jim Harbaugh says Michael Crabtree's old X receiver position will be opened to a three-receiver competition between A.J. Jenkins, rookie Quinton Patton, and practice squad-type Ricardo Lockette.
If one of the three doesn't grab the bull by the horns, the 49ers will probably make a move before or early in training camp. "We'll put Jenkins, Patton, Ricardo Lockette at the same position and let them compete and emerge," Harbaugh promised. "The good news is somebody will emerge because they have to." It's a huge opportunity for Jenkins, who looked like a first-round bust as a rookie. He didn't catch a pass and was inactive for 14-of-19 games, including the playoffs.

49ers WR A.J. Jenkins admits his rookie season was "very humbling," and is trying to bulk up from 192 pounds to 200.
"From being the top dog on campus to not playing at all, it teaches you a lot about the game and you try learning from the sidelines and other players," Jenkins said. "I need to make sure it doesn’t happen again this year." In the mix for No. 3 receiver duties behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin, Jenkins is currently tipping the scales at 196. For the time being, he remains off the fantasy radar.

The Sacramento Bee considers the 49ers' No. 3 receiver job "wide open."
Keep in mind San Francisco's third receiver rotation wasn't productive in 2012 as Ted Ginn and Kyle Williams rotated behind Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss. Still, there is some opportunity for A.J. Jenkins behind Crabtree and Anquan Boldin. The 2012 first-rounder has reportedly added muscle this offseason. Jenkins will be competing with Quinton Patton, Williams, and Ricardo Lockette.

Colin Kaepernick believes second-year WR A.J. Jenkins is "progressing along," and "getting better."
After reporting to the team out of shape, Jenkins spent the first 12 weeks of his rookie season on the bench. He's been working out with Kaepernick this offseason in an effort to refine his craft heading into year two. It's a good sign his quarterback has seen progress, as Jenkins is expected to have a bigger role following the departure of Randy Moss and injury to Mario Manningham. Jenkins saw just one target in 2012.

Kendall Hunter (Achilles surgery) still expects to be a full go for training camp.
Hunter, who blew out his left Achilles' tendon on Nov. 25, recently resumed sprint work. He won't participate in OTAs or minicamps, but claims he's on track to battle for reps behind Frank Gore come August. Still, it would be an awfully quick recovery for Hunter. Note that Mikel Leshoure's rehab from the same injury lasted roughly 13 months. Leshoure also lacked burst upon return.

Although the 49ers' medical exam of Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) yielded positive results according to Jim Harbaugh, the coach says Lattimore must take a "step back" in terms of cutting drills.
"The ACL looks really good for Marcus," insisted Harbaugh. "We're just going to have to take a step back in terms of the cutting because we want that inside of the knee, the lateral side of the knee to heal fully. But we're good." Lattimore conceded he'd be "fine" with sitting out the entire 2013 season. Harbaugh said the 49ers will determine his playing status at a later date.

Williams was facing an uphill battle to be ready for the offseason program, but he's reportedly on pace to return at the start of training camp. Manningham was never expected to participate in OTAs, and he's a candidate to start the season on the PUP list. Both will compete for roster spots.

Mario Manningham (knee) believes he'll be ready for Week 1.
It's an optimistic assertion. Manningham tore his ACL and PCL during Week 16 last season, a devastating injury that most players need nine months to recover from. He won't be ready for the start of training camp and will be in a race to avoid the PUP list. The Niners can't count on Manningham while making plans to replace Michael Crabtree (Achilles').

Updating a previous item, coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Michael Crabtree's Achilles' tendon was "completely torn" during Tuesday's OTA practice, and the injury was to Crabtree's right Achilles'.
So this wasn't a partial tear like Terrell Suggs' April 2012 Achilles' injury. For bookkeeping, we like to know which side of Crabtree's body was injured, the full extent of the injury, and all dates associated with his recovery, in order to provide accurate timelines in the future. Crabtree underwent surgery on Wednesday, May 22. Per Harbaugh, the full Achilles' tear occurred when Crabtree was "coming in motion and just planted and started a route, and it felt like someone kicked him in the Achilles'." The 49ers hope to have Crabtree back around Week 12.
