Redskins signed No. 71 overall pick Josh LeRibeus to a four-year contract.
A power-blocking guard in June Jones' SMU spread, LeRibeus has moved to center in Washington, practicing there exclusively in OTAs. LeRibeus figures to be a top "swing" interior reserve during his first season. Once he learns to zone block, LeRibeus could push for a full-time role as soon as 2013.

Redskins third-round pick Josh LeRibeus practiced exclusively at center during the team's first rookie minicamp.
LeRibeus was a power-blocking guard at Southern Methodist, but the Redskins are turning him into a zone-blocking center. If athletic enough to execute the transition, LeRibeus could supplant Will Montgomery in a season or two.

Redskins selected SMU OG Josh LeRibeus with the No. 71 pick in the 2012 draft.
After missing the 2010 campaign due to academic ineligibility and later putting on too much weight, LeRibeus slowly built up his draft stock last season. A Mike Shanahan zone-blocking fit, LeRibeus' strengths are quickness, toughness, and explosion off the ball. He should get an opportunity to compete with Kory Lichtensteiger for the starting left guard job.

Robert Griffin III
Sidelined
During a Q&A session with the media on Wednesday, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan reiterated the team's intent to rely on the zone-read.
The Redskins took a lot of heat last year for using RG3 on designed runs, leaving him susceptible to big hits. Kyle Shanahan disagreed, saying the zone-read "kept Griffin safe," and the quarterback's injuries came "on broken pass plays." He added Griffin needs to know when to slide, but it sounds like RG3's running chances won't necessarily be scaled back by a big margin.

Roy Helu (Achilles', toe) expects to be a full participant in next week's minicamp.
Helu made it through two days of OTAs without incident this week, and finally appears healthy enough to fight for a roster spot. With Helu, there's always the possibility of a setback, but he should be 100 percent for camp as he tries to earn third-down duties.

Chris Thompson
Sidelined
Redskins rookie RB Chris Thompson (torn ACL) is "more than a month away" from receiving full clearance, but is tentatively expected to be ready for training camp.
"It’s something I have to be patient with," Thompson said. "But I know my time will come." A pint-sized (5-foot-7, 192 pounds) scatback, Thompson will be in the mix for third-down duties as long as he's healthy come the preseason.

Pierre Garcon is planning to wear special shoes this season to help with the torn ligament in his right foot.
Garcon has opted against surgery because there's no guarantee that it will completely solve his injury. Therefore, he's looking toward pain management. "I have to learn a lot about my foot and how I run and things like that with all these injuries, but it's getting better," he said. If anywhere near 100 percent, Garcon has monster upside as an explosive "X" receiver in the Shanahan & Son offense. We'll get a better look at his progress in training camp.

Coach Mike Shanahan says Fred Davis (Achilles') will be held out of next week's minicamp.
Shanahan "doesn't want" Davis to practice and instead wants to "use caution" and hold the tight end out until training camp, even though he could play in a game if he had to next week. There's no reason for the Redskins to rush Davis, but it's clear he's on track to be on the field in July.

Jordan Reed
Sidelined
Redskins third-round TE Jordan Reed (leg) has yet to practice at OTAs, and doesn't expect to be cleared for June's minicamp.
Reed expects to be cleared in three weeks, which would have him just missing minicamp, but ready for training camp. "It’s going good," Reed said Thursday. "I’m getting stronger, getting my muscle back. That’s all I really need to do: get my muscle back and I’ll be all set." Reed could fight for targets as a rookie with Fred Davis coming back from a torn Achilles', but he's not off to a great start.
