49ers coach Mike Singletary wouldn't commit to starting LT Barry Sims a second straight week after he filled in for the injured Joe Staley (fractured fibula) in Week 11.
Singletary said he thought Sims did a "decent job," but the offensive line as a whole really struggled to protect quarterback Troy Smith and open holes in the running game. Adam Snyder looms as another option, but if the Niners thought he was better, he would have filled in for Staley in the first place.

Barry Sims is expected to step in as the 49ers' starting left tackle with Joe Staley out for the season.
Coach Mike Singletary is still officially deciding between Sims and Adam Snyder, but Sims is expected to get the call. The 12-year veteran held up well on Alex Smith's blindside last season when Staley missed time.

49ers re-signed OT Barry Sims to a one-year contract.
Sims, 35, can make up to $2.1M, likely through start-based incentives. The 49ers, of course, would prefer he not see first-team action in 2010 despite a solid showing in seven starts last season. San Francisco will likely draft a right tackle of the future this April and keep Sims on as a "swing" reserve.

Free agent OT Barry Sims is expected to decide later this week where he will sign.
Sims has already visited with the Redskins and the Niners have shown interest in bringing him back. He may take a trip to Seattle, where the future of former Pro Bowler Walter Jones is still up in the air. All teams should view Sims as a backup at age 35.

Kendall Hunter (Achilles surgery) still expects to be a full go for training camp.
Hunter, who blew out his left Achilles' tendon on Nov. 25, recently resumed sprint work. He won't participate in OTAs or minicamps, but claims he's on track to battle for reps behind Frank Gore come August. Still, it would be an awfully quick recovery for Hunter. Note that Mikel Leshoure's rehab from the same injury lasted roughly 13 months. Leshoure also lacked burst upon return.

Although the 49ers' medical exam of Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) yielded positive results according to Jim Harbaugh, the coach says Lattimore must take a "step back" in terms of cutting drills.
"The ACL looks really good for Marcus," insisted Harbaugh. "We're just going to have to take a step back in terms of the cutting because we want that inside of the knee, the lateral side of the knee to heal fully. But we're good." Lattimore conceded he'd be "fine" with sitting out the entire 2013 season. Harbaugh said the 49ers will determine his playing status at a later date.

Michael Crabtree underwent surgery on his torn Achilles' Wednesday, and is expected to be sidelined a minimum of six months.
The 49ers aren't messing around with their No. 1 receiver. Many have pointed to Terrell Suggs and Da'Quan Bowers' 2012 mid-season returns from spring Achilles' injuries as hope for Crabtree's 2013, but they are pass rushers required to do far less cutting than Crabtree does as a receiver. In a best-case scenario, Crabtree will likely begin the year on PUP with an eye toward returning in the playoffs. It's almost certainly going to be a lost year for a player coming off a breakout campaign.

Mario Manningham agreed to a pay cut to stay in San Francisco, slashing his base salary from $3.6 million to $1.8 million.
Manningham is coming off ACL and PCL reconstruction, so he had no leverage. The total pay cut is actually $2.15 million because Manningham agreed to eliminate a $250,000 offseason roster bonus in addition to a $100,000 workout bonus. Manningham suffered the injury in Week 16 and is not expected to be healthy for training camp. Anything the 49ers get from him in 2013 will be a bonus.

Williams was facing an uphill battle to be ready for the offseason program, but he's reportedly on pace to return at the start of training camp. Manningham was never expected to participate in OTAs, and he's a candidate to start the season on the PUP list. Both will compete for roster spots.
