Matt Carkner has decided to hang up his skates after a 15-year pro career.
Carkner is one of those players that can provide some hope to those who are still fighting to get their big break in the NHL long after the conventional wisdom suggests they won't get it. Carkner didn't make his NHL debut until 2006 when he was 25 years old and that was just a one-game stint with the San Jose Sharks. After that he wouldn't get another chance to play in the NHL until 2009 when he was 28 years old and participated in a single game with Ottawa. He finally secured a regular role with the Senators the following season though and he went on to play in 237 career NHL games, recording 27 points and 556 penalty minutes over his tenure.
