Ryan Truex finished 30th in the STP 500 at Martinsville this spring, but that is his only top-30 in five races on this track type. His last five attempts this season have ended in results of 36th or worse, and he needs a top-30 to restore his confidence.

Unfortunately his Martinsville finish and a 20th at Pocono in August are his only two top-30s in 29 career starts, so it is unlikely that he will make his way onto many fantasy rosters.

David Gilliland has scored five 20-something finishes in the five short, flat track races this year, but his most recent attempt at Richmond barely made the grade; he finished 29th in the Federated Auto Parts 400.

Gilliland’s 2014 average on this track type has been 25.6 and his New Hampshire result was a 24th. Expect a mid-20s finish and plan accordingly, which means he could fit a specific niche on a player’s roster.

Aric Almirola posted back-to-back 20-something finishes in 2012 and then shocked the field with a fifth in summer 2013. His last two efforts have also ended in the 20s, so if the pattern holds, he could be ready to score another strong result.

Patterns such as these are interesting, but not particularly predictive. However, Almirola was running strong at Chicagoland in the MyAFibStory.com 400 before blowing an engine and that makes him a driver worthy of attention. If he practices well, he could make his way onto a few fantasy rosters.

Brian Vickers entered the Camping World RV Sales 301 this July with a five-race, top-15 streak and looked like he might be a solid dark horse. He qualified 17th, but never found the handle and finished outside the top 20.

He will be focused on regaining his momentum to get back inside the top 15. His single bad run this summer could be considered a fluke and allow fantasy players to take a risk on the No. 55 if Vickers practices well.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. enters the Sylvania 300 with five consecutive top-15s at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He finished 10th in this summer’s Camping World RV Sales 301.

This summer’s top-10 came on the heels of a sixth last fall. He has not scored a top-five since early in 2012, but his consistency has been apparent since the beginning of the 2010 season. In his last nine races on this track, his worst result was a 17th. There is minimal risk in starting him in the Sylvania 300.
Sep 18 - 4:14 PM

Kyle Busch has earned three consecutive runner-up finishes at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and would love to improve his effort by one spot in the Sylvania 300.

The bad news is that Busch failed to score a single top-10 in the four races leading up to that streak and his NHMS average in 2011/2012 was a modest 22.8. He does not have very much current momentum from the 2014 season and should be happy to score a top-10.
Sep 18 - 12:00 PM

Cole Whitt has been one of the most consistent drivers on short, flat tracks this year, but he will be useful to fantasy owners only in extreme need. Four of his five races on this track type have ended a narrow band from 27th to 30th.

While that does not seem overly impressive on its face, Whitt has consistently outperformed 30 percent of the field and could be used as a bargain basement pick.

Austin Dillon is looking for his third top-15 finish on a short, flat track this week. His previous two successes came in the STP 500 at Martinsville and the Camping World RV Sales 301 at New Hampshire.

Because it is a rhythm track, New Hampshire is prone to allowing drivers to sweep the top 15 in a single season, so Dillon should be viewed as a solid fantasy pick this week as long as he fits a niche on one’s roster.
Sep 18 - 11:57 AM

Ryan Newman has been fairly consistent and occasionally strong at New Hampshire in the past six years. In that span of races, he has one victory, another top-five, and seven top-10s in 10 races on this track.

His victory came in 2011, but his most recent top-five was earned this summer in the Camping World RV Sales 301. Newman got into the Chase based on points, which suggests to fantasy players that he knows how to finish strong and earn for them.
Sep 18 - 11:56 AM

Jeff Gordon carries the momentum of back-to-back runner-up finishes from Richmond and Chicagoland into New Hampshire for the Sylvania 300 and he was one of the strongest contenders this July in the Camping World RV Sales 301 before running out of fuel during the final caution flag.

Last week Brad Keselowski beat Gordon for the second time in as many races, but if the battle comes down to these two at New Hampshire, fantasy owners can expect Gordon to be quite a bit more aggressive since he still needs a win in the Challenger round to automatically advance to the Contender round.

McDowell will be the fifth different driver this year to pilot the Mustang for the 22 team. Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Alex Tagliani have all made at least one start for the team this season. So far, the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford has led a total of 646 laps, has won four races and captured seven poles. McDowell looks to add to these impressive stats this weekend in Kentucky.-Team Penske
