Bucs hired former Steelers WR Antwaan Randle El as an offensive assistant.

Former NFL S Cody Grimm, son of legendary OL coach Russ Grimm, was also hired as a defense/special teams assistant. Coach Bruce Arians has done a great job of getting young coaches into the league, notably Byron Leftwich who has risen to OC duties rather quickly. Randle El played for Arians in Pittsburgh. This will be the 39-year-old's first coaching gig.

Broncos hired ex-Bears DBs coach Ed Donatell as defensive coordinator.

New Broncos coach Vic Fangio's top lieutenant in Chicago, Donatell will serve in the same role in Denver. 61-year-old Donatell has had a long and winding coaching career, coordinating multiple defenses both in the pros and college. His last NFL coordinating job was with the Falcons from 2004-06. We would assume Fangio will serve as his own play-caller.

TMZ reports Falcons DE Takk McKinley was detained by Los Angeles police on Tuesday following an incident at a hotel and is "undergoing a mental evaluation."

The gossip website reports McKinley was with a friend who "became concerned about McKinley's well being" and called police. McKinley reportedly "agreed it was in his best interest to get help," cooperated and left. The 2017 first-rounder made 15 2018 appearances, tallying seven sacks.

ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton speculates Cam Newton could sit out the entire 2019 season if he undergoes another shoulder operation.

It's pure speculation, and not particularly informed, though owner David Tepper also casually mentioned the possibility of Newton sitting out in 2019. "If you told me he took a year off and could recover and be fully recovered and everything else, and that's what it took, an extra year, why wouldn't you do that," Tapper asked rhetorically on Tuesday. At least as of January, that scenario does not seem particularly likely. Newton is opting for rest and rehab before deciding on his second operation in three years.

49ers hired ex-Broncos DC Joe Woods as passing-game coordinator (defense).

Woods spent the past two years working for Vance Joseph in Denver. He will work under Robert Saleh in San Francisco, apparently overseeing his pass defense.
Jan 15 - 7:17 PM

Speaking Tuesday, Panthers owner David Tepper said he had "no idea" if Cam Newton would undergo offseason shoulder surgery.

Looking perhaps 60-70 percent healthy down the stretch because of his shoulder, Newton was held out for Weeks 16 and 17. Newton underwent shoulder surgery following the 2016 season and has not ruled out another operation. The time to decide will be soon, though rest and rehab is always the preferable course. The problem is it often fails.

The Cowboys will retain OL coach Marc Colombo for 2019.

The Cowboys fired ex-OL coach Paul Alexander during their Week 8 bye, and Colombo took over. He apparently acquitted himself well during the second half of the season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Redskins "also pursued" new Jets DC Gregg Williams.

At least on paper, Greg Manusky is still Jay Gruden's defensive boss, but the Redskins apparently had their eyes on an upgrade. A former Redskins assistant who was passed over for the head job in Washington multiple times, Williams likely did not have much interest in heading back to the nation's capital.

Jets hired Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator.

Williams was somewhat of a laughingstock as Browns defensive coordinator in 2017, but he did a better job in 2018 as he served as interim head coach. Devoted to aggression and deep safety drops, Williams has coached just about everywhere and overseen some strong defenses, most famously the Super Bowl winning Saints in 2009. He has some interesting pieces to work with in New York, but he's inheriting a unit that was nothing special in 2018. He figures to butt heads with coach Adam Gase.

The Broncos are interviewing Bears DBs coach Ed Donatell for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

It has been rumored for a while that new Broncos coach Vic Fangio might be bringing Donatell with him to Denver. 61-year-old Donatell coordinated the Packers and Falcons earlier this century. Fangio still figures to serve as his own defensive boss.

FOX/CBS Indianapolis reports the Colts would like to re-sign impending free agent K Adam Vinatieri.

Asked about Vinatieri at Monday's season-ending press conference, GM Chris Ballard said "we'll see." Ballard did say he "absolutely" believes Vinatieri can still kick at the age of 46. Vinatieri has said he wants to return. This shouldn't take long.

Saints signed DT Tyrunn Walker.

The Saints need an extra body up front after losing Sheldon Rankins to a torn Achilles' tendon. A Ram in 2017, Walker spent the regular season on the street.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson confirmed Carson Wentz "is the quarterback going forward."

This became a question after Nick Foles led the Eagles on another late-season run including a playoff win, but the reality is there was not much of a decision to be made. Wentz is younger, will likely be cheaper for the next two seasons, and is a better quarterback when healthy. The when healthy part is certainly a concern following two injury-shortened seasons, but EVP Howie Roseman expressed "confidence in his ability to be our quarterback and to be hopefully a 19-game starter." The Eagles will likely look to tag-and-trade Foles this offseason.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports ex-Cardinals OC Mike McCoy is interviewing for the Jaguars' offensive coordinator vacancy.

McCoy has been fired during the season by two different organizations in the last two years. The Jaguars are not an enticing landing spot for an offensive coach, but they should be able to do better.
Jan 15 - 12:03 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports ex-Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter is interviewing for the same job with the Cardinals.

Cooter's final season with the Lions was a disaster, but he had Matthew Stafford playing the best football of his career before Matt Patricia showed up. He would be a good hire for new-to-the-NFL coach Kliff Kingsbury.
