Dustin Pedroia (knee) has been cleared to begin running.
Pedroia mentioned on a podcast last week that his goal is to be ready for Opening Day. With him being cleared to run a full month ahead of the start of spring training, it may just give him a shot. Boston will likely take things very carefully with the 34-year-old second baseman, however, and we'll need to hear the words "baseball activities" before getting too optimistic. Still, this is good news for Pedroia and Red Sox fans. Jan 18 - 3:13 PM

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said Monday that the club views Marco Hernandez as a possible stopgap option at second base until Dustin Pedroia is ready to return from knee surgery.

The Red Sox will have to get by until at least May as Pedroia rehabs from a cartilage restoration procedure on his left knee. "We do like Marco Hernandez a lot," said Dombrowski. "We think he’s a really good player. And all you have to do is come to the meetings to know that other organizations think he’s a good player too." Hernandez, 25, batted .276/.300/.328 across 21 games with the Red Sox this season before undergoing shoulder surgery in May. Brock Holt, Tzu-Wei Lin and Deven Marrero are among the other options, though Dombrowski hasn't ruled out bringing someone else in. Re-signing Eduardo Nunez could make some sense, depending on how his market develops.

Hanley Ramirez is out of the Red Sox lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Athletics.

Dustin Pedroia will take a turn at DH and Brock Holt will play second base in the matinee tilt. Hanley is 0-for-9 over Boston's last two games and slashing just .238/.320/.423 for the year.

Hanley Ramirez is not in the Red Sox' lineup for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Yankees.

Dustin Pedroia and Mitch Moreland aren't playing, either. Chris Young is in the designated hitter spot, Sam Travis is at first base, Tzu-Wei Lin is at second base and Deven Marrero is at third.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said he wouldn't consider starting Mookie Betts at second base.

The question came up because Dustin Pedroia is out with a wrist injury, though he's expected to be back after a minimum DL stint. Betts came up through the minors as a second baseman and spent some time there as a rookie in 2014, but that was ages ago. Mookie is a full-time outfielder now, and a pretty good one at that. Josh Rutledge has been filling in at second base for the Red Sox.
