Brad Penny will make a prorated salary of $500,000 if he's added to the big league roster.
The Giants see Penny as a possible reliever with Brian Wilson (Tommy John surgery) out for the season and Guillermo Mota serving a 100-game suspension. According to CSNBayArea.com's Andrew Baggarly, the ''target for Penny to join the team'' is May 30. Penny is expected to report to extended spring training Monday, with first minor league assignment at Triple-A Fresno. May 19 - 8:05 AM

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Friday that Rick Porcello will start Game 4 of the ALDS against the Yankees on Tuesday.

He gets the nod over Brad Penny, who will pitch in middle relief. Porcello, 22, posted a 4.75 ERA over 31 starts this season. Of course, Justin Verlander could come back on short rest if the Tigers are down 2-1 in the series.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland has revealed that Doug Fister will be his No. 2 starter during the postseason.

It's not surprising, as Fister has been dynamite since arriving in Detroit, posting a 2.02 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 48/5 K/BB ratio over 62 1/3 innings. Max Scherzer, who will be the No. 3 starter, has better stuff than Fister but has been inconsistent this season. Rick Porcello will serve as the No. 4 starter, with Brad Penny, if he even makes the postseason roster, moving into a long relief role.
