Justin Verlander continued his early-season dominance on Wednesday, scattering five hits and a walk over nine shutout innings against the Angels.
It's the eighth shutout of Verlander's career and first since the 2015 season. He racked up seven strikeouts on the night. The biggest jams that he was in on the evening came in the final two innings. In the eighth, the Angels put runners at second and third with one out before Verlander fanned Luis Valbuena and got Mike Trout to bounce back to the mound. Then with two outs in the ninth, Albert Pujols singled and Andrelton Simmons walked to put the tying runs on base, but the right-hander was able to battle back and get Zack Cozart to pop out on his 118th pitch of the night. Now 5-2 on the season, Verlander owns a jaw-dropping 1.05 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 84/14 K/BB ratio over 68 2/3 innings. He and teammate Gerrit Cole look to be the early front-runners for the American League Cy Young Award. May 17 - 12:27 AM

Dallas Keuchel will start Game 1 of the World Series for the Astros on Tuesday versus the Dodgers.

Keuchel is the obvious choice with Justin Verlander having pitched on Friday. He will be taking the ball on an extra day of rest when he opposes Clayton Kershaw at Dodger Stadium, while Verlander will go in Game 2 Wednesday on regular rest. The Dodgers have not announced who will pitch for them in Game 2, but it will likely be Rich Hill.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch announced Wednesday that Dallas Keuchel will start Game 1 of the ALCS.

Justin Verlander will follow him in Game 2 of the ALCS. Keuchel worked 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his one ALDS start against the Red Sox, striking out seven batters and yielding just three hits. Houston will either be matched up against the Indians or Yankees in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series. Those teams are playing a winner-advances ALDS Game 5 on Wednesday night at Cleveland's Progressive Field.

According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Dodgers' trade discussions with the Tigers have been more focused on Justin Wilson than Justin Verlander.

It's unlikely Verlander will be traded before Monday's deadline but Wilson could very well be packing his bags. He's drawn widespread interest with the Astros, Brewers, Dodgers, Indians, Nationals and Rays among his top suitors. Obviously Wilson's fantasy value would take a huge hit in Los Angeles, where he would likely serve in a setup role ahead of stud closer Kenley Jansen.

According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Dodgers are "increasingly confident" that they will acquire one of Yu Darvish, Sonny Gray or Justin Verlander ahead of Monday's trade deadline.

The Dodgers were looking to upgrade their rotation even before injuries sent Clayton Kershaw and Brandon McCarthy to the disabled list. With Kershaw facing a potentially lengthy absence, L.A.'s sense of urgency has obviously increased. Darvish, Gray and Verlander have all drawn varying degrees of interest leading up to the deadline. Out of those three, Verlander would probably be L.A.'s fall-back given his age and exorbitant salary. The Dodgers are already the best team in baseball and adding a top-flight starter would probably make them World Series favorites.

According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, the Braves sent a top scout to Detroit this weekend.

The Braves are scouting both Justin Verlander and Michael Fulmer. Per Bowman, the Braves are more intrigued by Fulmer than Verlander, which should be the case as Fulmer is a decade younger and has had a much better year than Verlander. He's also far less expensive than Verlander, who is owed $28 million this season. Even with Detroit entering a rebuilding phase, the Tigers' asking price for Fulmer will likely be sky-high.
